......LHS News......
Originally sent October 10

I have a '59 classmate - PATSY (Sherratt) Theobald - and for some strange reason I insist on calling her Nancy. I did so (again) in last news & I apologize & will see if I can get my brain in gear!

From the eMail bag:
Frankie (Ingraham) Kinderman sends....."a 'hello' to longtime friend and neighbor of the past, Kenneth Easton. I hope to get home before long and would love to see some of those Lawton schools kids."

Ron Poole, class '55, and wife Marilyn send word that they are moving from the Seattle area to Austin Texas on Sept 30th. Their email will remain same.

Tom Burroughs, '56, writes....."I had the opportunity to talk with Pat Adair and see the pix from Canada. I had been to all the places she showed me but was nice to see them again. It has been several months since my wife (Phyllis) passed away and I'm still adjusting. I also talked with Charlotte McGill today in California and she is doing well and doing lots of traveling. Both these gals were a big part of my growing up years and it is always nice to touch base."
btw.....Tom would like to visit with any classmates via email or snail mail.

Laci Franks, 18 year old granddaughter of classmate Shirley (Edgmon) Franks, '55, has enlisted in the US Navy & is headed to Great Lakes Basic training in November! Anchors Away Laci!

Bruce Knowles up Alaska way writes....."Our summer is coming to an end, we had frost last week [end of Aug] and leaves are turning colors. I thought I would send you some flowers our friend grew. They are Delphiniums; that what you get with 24 hours of sunlight."

I doubt few know - or care - BUT...the Lava Lamp is 50 years old!  Yes!  The design was created by a British inventor and former WW11 pilot Edward Craven-Walker. It was first marketed as an "exotic conversation piece" by a British company back in 1963. The lamp came to be a real icon or 'symbol' of the '60's. It has been much copied since, but original - and working- ones can still be found occasionally in antique and junk shops.
And for you with inquiring minds....the lamps are based on two liquids of slightly different density which will not mix.  The heavier liquid sinks to the bottom, but when heated by the lamp light its density decreases and it floats to the top!  Viola!~

From the eMail bag:

"Surfin USA" by the Beach Boys was voted most popular summer song of all time on a Google poll!  The VERY popular group formed in about 1961.  Fantastic sound.

"We'll all be gone for the summer
We're on safari to stay
Tell the teacher we're surfin'
Surfin' U.S.A."

New format...sadly...NEW NAME!  The Lawton High Tattler will cease publishing in paper form this year and will move to an on-line format only!  It was also announced that the on-line newspaper will have a NEW name chosen by the staff! First edition should be available first week of October and in the beginning will probably be a monthly. Not sure where to access as yet!  Change....inevitable, but sad. The Tattler really kept us informed back in the day!

Norman Cantrell, Lawton, has been elected as President of The Piano Technicians Guild and as such will represent the Guilds US interest in October when he attends the International meeting of such guilds in Hangzou, China.  Cantrell operates a Piano Clinic in Lawton specializing in tuning, repair, and restoration of pianos, organs, and other similar music instruments.  Norman is LHS class 1978.

From the eMail bag:

Ed Harp
would like to have any pictures taken at the Friday night reunion event at Ramon Johns....if any of you have Friday night photos, please share with Ed.

"I'm nearing the end of my quest to see all the national parks out west (I'm saving California for later).  I bought a jeep and headed west -- all by myself -- to prove I could do it.  I started in the BadLands, then Black Hills, on to Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Bryce Canyon, Dead Horse Point, CanyonLands, Red Canyon, Mesa Verde, Zion, Grand Canyon.... and on the way home stopped off in Santa Fe, NM, to have lunch with Rex Givens. He loves it in Santa Fe .... almost convinced me that it is the place to live. I'm enclosing a picture of me at Mt. Rushmore.  This was an absolutely wonderful trip -- a once-in-a-lifetime adventure."
Beverly (Spradlin) Raley, '59

"Bev [wife] and I are preparing for a hike into the Grand Canyon this fall.  To get in shape, we are hiking (6 miles rt)  Mount Scott in the early AM.  To finish another four miles, we then hike to the Panther Creek arrastra.  If one wishes to find it, take Ellenbrook's article with you and use it as carefully as a map.  The first time we looked, Bev and I lucked out and found it.  Then we failed twice to find it again.  The fourth time we used his GPS location and went right to it.
Even if you don't find it, the whole point is "the chase", and being out in the refuge."
Don Wooley, '64

"Charles Ellenbrook gave a guided tour to an Arrastra (don't know if it was Panther Creek but it may have been) many years ago.  I really enjoyed the tour."
Frankie (Kurtz) Browning

Tempe Brown (Tip Cockrell),
'57, now has her childrens book in print! "The Little Dirt People". If you have interest you can visit her website:  tempebrown.com or tempebrown.org. Click on books and cd's.

"We are in Colorado for the summer.  Had to evacuate because of the fires out here.  We spent 12 days in Santa Fe before we could get back in to our RV."
Sandra (Austin) Smith and Glen

'59 classmate Larry Joe Thompson - traveling on the West coast - tangled with a deer and his car lost!  He was stalled in Spokane for a while getting repairs but headed home.

Note:  Ray & Tommye were in Lawton (from CA) for the reunion Aug. 2-3 and announced they were leaving CA for good, purchasing a house and moving home to Lawton. It was a busy few days with the reunion, the purchase of a house, sale of their house in CA, and a great interview with Ray and story by Herb Jacobs for his column:  Sunday August 11, page 3-C.  Ray had a very distinguished career in sports at LHS, receiving award as Lawton Highs Outstanding Athlete in 1952. Great read.
**There will be a celebration of life for Ray at the home in Chowchilla, CA (9020 Hunters Creek) on  Sunday September 22 at 2:00pm; then a celebration of life for Ray at their new Lawton home on Saturday November 30, 2:00pm - 4105 NW Meadowbrook.  Tommye says "there will be no special services....it's a chance for our families and friends to get together and reminisce.  We'd love to have you at either one or both."

......LHS News......
 Originally sent August 6/7

Some will be receiving the news for first time....this is a good start for you as this is a 'double' batch of the news. Hope you enjoy! Remember, previously sent news and photos are archived at the blog: www.thewolvernet.blogspot.com

Does anyone know the whereabouts of classmate Jim Sutton? Apparently he has moved.
And, anyone know where-a-bouts of Cheryl (Draganza) Dayton? Or, Pam Fincher. Pam was 'army brat' and may not have graduated? Friends are looking. Let me know if you have info. Thanks.

Reunion of classes '52 ~ '54 this past week-end was well attended and fun had by all! Re-cap and pictures SOON!
btw.....Don Williams, class '53, was in town for the reunion and Herb Jacobs used the opportunity to write a great article for his Sunday column - 'Where Are They Now'? - highlighting Dons abilities on the tennis and squash courts as well as his distinguished career after he graduated West Point. Very good read. Sunday Constitution, August 4, page 3-C.

Appreciate Mary (Bowman) Thigpen, '49, for keeping me in the loop....this from Mary.......
Peggy (Loud) Forster, '49, has her book in print!!! 'Letter Sounds to Help Parents Help Their Children' is available at: http: www.createspace.com It is also available through Amazon.com. Peggy wrote..."it has been quite a journey". She is living in a Senior complex in San Francisco.

Edward Charles Ellenbrooks' August article is most interesting - about the Panther Creek Arrastra. [excerpt].....Arrastras were first introduced into this country by the Spanish in the 1500's. Arrastra comes from a Spanish word that means ...'to drag along the ground'. They were used to 'crush' rocks/ore in search for gold or silver. Probably built by miners at the turn of the century, the Panther Creek arrastra is one of the finest examples of a Spanish type arrastra and one of three found in the Wichitas.  This particular grinder is a little difficult to find, but Charles article gives much information about it as well as the location (map included). Very interesting read. Lawton Constitution, Saturday July 13, page 1 -C. Or, you can always contact Charles at: ecebrook sbcglobal.net

btw....Lou Green has visited one of the arrastras in the Wichitas. Attached is a picture Luther sent back in spring of 2011. Gives a good idea what they look like although it is quite crude and do NOT believe it is the one Charles has pictured in his article.

Great article featuring Bill and Billie (Suggs) Penn. Titled: 'Bill and Billie: A Powerful Pair'. Talks of the years the pair have spent involved in the Lawton community. Billie was field representative for US Sen. Don Nickles for 18 years and Bills many years of singing barbershop and being key member of the award winning Chairman of the Chord quartet. Billie Marie (Suggs) was LHS class 1957 and Bill is from Walters. They will celebrate their 54th anniversary this September. Great read. Lawton Constitution, Monday July 8, front page and page 3-A. www .swoknews.com

Karon (Carpenter) Kylllingstad, '60, back home in Lawton after 2 weeks visiting with Karen (Kimball) Hutton, '60, in Ohio and Pittsburgh. Also Karens sister, Barbara (Kimball) Grundman and two of her children Allen Grundman and Susan Grundman. They are all LHS grads!

Era Faye (Hamm) Kurtz, '59 writes that she & hubby David, '59, are still in Wichita, Kansas and doing great!

Charles and Jackie Darling had super time on a recent trip to Alaska. As fires were raging in S. CA they were craving Alaskas cooler temps.

George Gill, '63, (my bro) in Sturgis, SD the past few days where he attended the annual Motorcycle rally! He's a 'Harley Hogger!'

Glenn Webb and wife Carole report "the time of their lives" in Athens and Ephesus. Glenn sent a great photo album. btw...Glenn is class '53 and was diagnosed recently with a benign brain tumor. Apparently he has had it for years and at least so far has not experienced any side-effects from the tumor.

July Anniversaries include...... '59 classmate Ed Coulson and wife Susan celebrated their 25th Anniversary by taking 22 members of their family to Disneyland! Sounds 'magical' to me. The Coulsons live in Phoenix. Major congrats guys!!!

More congratulations due Fred Burch, '52, and wife Claudette (Taylor), '55, of Lawton, as they celebrated their 60th anniversary by renewing their wedding vows at an event hosted by their daughter Fredda Steinberg in Houston.

Also, '59 classmate Ellouise (Haulcy) and hubby Ernest Paul Love celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception in Lawton hosted by their children and grandchildren.

Happy, Happy, August Anniversary to: Janey (Johnston) and Bill Scott - 49th; Babs (Yarmuk) and Dee Givens - 52nd; Georgia (Gill) and Bill Williams - 48th; George and Christine (Parr) Gill - 47th. Congratulations to us all....wonderful accomplishment!

And sing August Happy Birthday to: Sally Beth (Bassell) Wiseman; Bettie (Mowrey) Vail; Megan (Gill) Caudill; Tiffany Gill.

Appreciate the vintage picture of Doe Doe Park send by Nikki Baker. I have posted it on the blog, right hand side, scroll down. It joins another picture of Doe Doe.

Tom Burroughs writes that he has "fond memories" of many he reads about in the news and would love to visit [email, mail, or phone] with any LHS classmates. You can correspond with Tom at (406) 837-5594; saxman cyberport.net snail mail is: PO Box 536, Bigfork, MT 59911. Tom is looking forward to the next class '56 reunion and plans to be there!

Some Lawton or former Lawton Sooners in attendance: Dee and Babs Givens; Bob and Karen Drewry; Suzie (Drewry) Battalia; Jack and Judy (Warkentin) Bryan.

......LHS News......
Originally sent July 13/14

Please note: I continue to have computer issues.  It has made for difficulties in getting the news out.  You should check the blog from time to time to see if you missed any 'news'. And, due to difficulities, there is a LOT of news and some is little older.  www.thewolvernet.blogspot.com/

btw....ALL the details about the upcoming August 2-3 reunion of '52- '53- '54 classes, is posted on the blog. Deadline is coming up quick - July 15.

Numerous responses about the terrible [May] storms in Oklahoma.............

"LHS grad Charles Woodward, probably '60 or '61,  has a daughter, Karen Maranelli, who is the teacher  injured so badly in the first Moore tornado. She was covering some of her students, and I believe something fell on her.  She is doing pretty well.. and should be discharged from the hospital soon, if not already.  My brother lives in Moore also  (Bill Stark, LHS 66, I think), and was at work at Tinker.  However, his wife, Linda (Pierson) Stark, also an LHS grad, was at home in Moore, in their shelter in the floor of the garage.
I remember being at a Latin Club convention or something like that in Norman, and we were outside of the building on a break, and watched a tornado coming our way. It veered off, I guess, since it didn't come any further toward us.   Like the crazy teenagers that we were, we just stood there and watched it. I wonder if anyone else remembers this?"     Elaine Stark Paine, '58"We live just south of 19th street in Moore (one mile South on SW 169th). 19th street looks like the devastation in Vietnam after the B52 bombing."
Robert Winstead

Correction:
Jan (Mitchell) Irwin lives in her own home.  Daughters is just short distance from her & it is daughters home that was destroyed in the tornado.

John Waller also lives very close to where the tornado hit. Fortunately no damage and he wasn't even in the state/country!  He was in Paris.....that's France, not Texas!
John also posted this recollection about previous news item....
"It was good to see a story about Fred Burch.  I didn't know about his baseball prowess.  For the past several years we've seen Fred and his bride (my LHS classmate, Claudette), at the annual, premier social event of Cotton County.  That event is a calf fry.  (I was required to explain to our fifty-one year old daughter that they don't fry the entire calf just carefully selected parts.)"

Possibly gonna have the most fun this summer award goes to...Lewis Chandler who emails........

"Summer plans begin this weekend [June 22nd] trip to St. Louis to watch the Cardinals and play golf each day. Home for two days and then off to the North Rim of The Grand Canyon.  Will tent camp. Will then travel up to Glacier Natl. Park and just fly fish and camp along the way.
In late July will be off to Madrid for 6 days, then take a train to Paris for 6 days, on to Rome via train for 3 days, then home.  Excited to say the  least."
I'd say!

'59 grad Larry Watson writes that he is still working in DC area but hopes to be in Charleston, SC this summer to visit with his daughter and her family.

Salas's Restaurant proved to be a chance meeting place for LHS grads.  Jerry Phelps, '57 and wife Gwen (Wood), '59, along with Doyce Grayson, '56 and Perry Brown, '57. My Bill & I joined in conversation that covered many topics!!!

LHS Golden Wolverine Juanita (Bowman) Perkins who celebrated her 102 bday in April was recently honored as a 50 year member in the [local] League of Women Voters. Juanita is the nicest, perkiest little lady. Her mind is sharp as a tack, only trouble she has is with her legs.  She lives at a local retirement center and you'd never think she was a day over 75. Sweet person.

'96 classmate Rep. TW Shannon - who is currently Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives - was  member of a panel that was featured and interviewed by Sean Hannity (FOX) on Friday evening - June 21.

Former LHS and Cameron football standout - Keith Lavender - was subject of Herb Jacobs column on Sunday.  (June 23, pg 7-C). Keith - who should be class '62-'63? - was "always known as one of the toughest players pound-for-pound". Herb's weekly 'Where Are They Now?' discusses how Lavender ended up in Lawton after growing up in Wichita Falls.  Good read!

LHS grads Keith Jackson and wife Alex (Roth) recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary. Lifelong Lawtonians, Keith is a businessman and currently serving on the Lawton City Council. Alex has helped in the family businesses and raising 3 children.  Major congrats guys!

More Happy June Birthdays.......Jack Rhodes, '59;  Dorothy (Dawson) DeMoro, '52; Ruth Ann Williams-Reeder, '52. And VERY SPECIAL Birthday Wishes to Ed Cagle who will be 90 years young on July 22.  Ed is LHS class 1941.  All the best Ed!

btw....Dorothy and Ruth Ann were born one day apart (June 7 and 8), same doctor, same nurse....Ruth Ann called Dorothy to wish her happy bday & to tell her she was going through an old box of Blue Bird and Camp Fire clippings and other precious memories of their childhood!

Appreciate emails from classmates:  Stella (Price) Naifeh; Larry Ray; Jan (Rice) Grogan; Kay (Kimball) Scott; Bettie (Mowry) Vail; Chuck Holcomb; Wayne Kniffin.

 ********************

Bruce Knowles emails that he and wife Shirley have been in CA [June] visiting kids/grandkids and had opportunity to visit with '62 grad Steve Thomas.  Steve has been receiving proton treatment for a brain tumor. Bruce says he "looks good, appears 100%" and is happy chemo treatments have not been too harsh.

Had contact from Tom Burroughs, class 1956. He wrote that he lost his wife of 48 years last November. A difficult time.  Tom is still in Bigfork, MT.

A snail mail from Glenda (Doan) Stanton informs that she is "through with radiation and trying to get back to normal."

********************

Since last news, sadly, numerous losses among our classmates:

Yvonne Coombs, '56 emailed on July 8th that Larry Hargett has passed.  No details. Larry was class 1956.

Jerry W. Pursley, 73, of Waco, TX passed on June 26 after long bout with cancer.  Jerry was LHS class 1957.
Services were July 9 in Lawton. Jerry is survived by a son and daughter and their families; a sister; large extended family.
Very nice obit and guest book at: www.beckerfuneral.com

......LHS News......
Originally sent June 7-8

I am sure most are well aware of the horrible tornado that came through Oklahoma on May 20.  It was a terrible weather event and so many precious lives lost in the destruction. The property damage is staggering and will be years in the re-building.  Those directly affected need our prayers and any help we can administer as they begin to rebuild their lives.

Several have asked about classmates that might have been affected.  As of this writing the only one I have knowledge of is Jan (Mitchell) Irwin, class '55.  She lived with her daughter and grandson.  They are all OK, but lost everything.  I know there are probably others who were directly affected and others close to the storm but not in the direct path.

Although retired, Dr. P.R. Ramey, '63, went to Norman Regional Hosp to help.

PS Sadly, more tornados in El Reno and OKC areas with loss of life and damage on May 31. This storm (tornado) has been recorded as the widest in history.

*****************

'59 classmate Joan (Lee) Houghton and hubby Jerry are off on a flight to Hawaii where they will board ship to cruise the Islands!  All in celebration of their 55th anniversary!  Major congrats....Aloha and bon voyage guys!

I had a lovely phone visit with Susan (Hankins) Ellington, '57, who was in the home town over the Memorial Day week-end. She joined numerous family (cousins and others) who got together for a mini (many)-reunion and some family genealogy work.  She said good to be back in Lawton even if briefly and after a wonderful visit she was headed home (Las Cruces, NM) with daughter doing the driving.

Another good read from Herb Jacobs - Lawton Constitution, May 26, page 3-C.  1963 classmate Scotty Long, home for his 50th reunion, recalled memories of ball games gone by.  Long was a starter on three State Championship teams in the 1962 calendar year.  As a Senior ('63), he was Boomer Conference Lineman of the Year and the baseball Player of the Year.  He made All-State in both sports.  As I said, good read with lot of familiar names.

Also, Herbs column of Sunday June 2 - page 3-C, features 1952 classmate Fred Burch and his baseball expertise.  Fred is one of only 25 Wolverines who have earned selection to the All-State baseball team.  Burch was a catcher and 3 year letterman for Coach Paul Wilson. Good read.
(See pix - shows Fred today, holding a picture of himself in uniform taken in 1952.)

Tommy (Boudreaux) Hobbs and hubby Ray, both class 1952, are planning to be 'home' for the August reunion.  They are living in CA and hope after making the long trip other '52 classmates will be at the reunion as well.  August 2-3-4.  Contact Janette (Hanes).
jhanes@stellar.net

A few days ago I was in traffic.  A beautiful late model, metallic red Cadillac was in front of me and the licence plate read:   [LHS4EVR]
In those colors! White haired man driving.  I did not recognize him, but the tag sentiment was right-on!

Sing Happy June Birthday to:  Mike Gill, '71; Barbara (Patton) James, '57; Bill Williams, '52; Janey (Johnston) Scott, '59; Babs (Yarmuk) Givens, '59; Bussie Wyatt, '58;

I have had several emails returned saying 'blocked' or some kind of spam blocker program. I do send in bulk and it will usually be blocked by any such program. Just wanted you to know in case you miss the 'news'. Afraid you won't get this either! sigh!

And, once again computer working against me. Would suggest any email sent to me go to both address (one above + the gvinenews@sbcglobal.net) If you have replied or sent anything to me at gvine since May 8...please resend to jorjaw email. Thanks. Does Bill Gates make house calls!?

A recent visit to Burgess Grill found several other LHS grads munching away. Among them Buddy Braddy, '54; Alvin Winham and wife Mary Lynn (Marler) - both '55 grads.
Had opportunity to visit with Mary Lynn after we all left Burgess and met again by chance at Johnsons Bakery to further our calorie intake!

Marys mother was Marie (Maupin) and she graduated LHS in 1928. She worked at the Wichita Mtns wildlife refuge and Marys dad - Wilbur Marler - worked as a lifeguard at Medicine Park swimming pool. Mary said Mary Grundy - who later was principal at Washington School and taught 7th grade American history at Central - - ran a hamburger stand at Medicine Park. Isn't that interesting!

Aside...my Bills mom - Helen - used to stop by Washington School to pick Miss Grundy up and they would head to Lake Lawtonka and fish till dark.

Speaking of Johnsons Bakery....had this note from Paul Soper....... "Thank you so much for the Happy Birthday wish! I had a wonderful Birthday Party including a white birthday cake from Johnson's! They have made my birthday cake for 68 years. Always just as good as the last!"

I told Paul, Johnsons still our family fav as well!

The class 1968 has CANCELLED their 45th reunion set for September 20-21. Saving their energies for their 50th. May possibly be an informal gathering this fall? If any questions call Eddie Hamra (580) 353-5800.

Class of '54 will be joined by class 1953 and 1952 - August 2-3-4. Janette (Hanes), '54, lives out of state and if anyone in Lawton from one of these classes could/would help her in getting this together she would greatly appreciate it. jhanes@stellar.net

John Roger Wyant, DVM, 75, of Piedmont, OK, passed on May 8 following complications of a stroke suffered some years back. Roger was LHS class 1956.
He is survived by wife Lucia; 3 sons and familys; 5 daughters and family; numerous grandchildren; brothers Mike Wyant and Phil Wyant - both LHS grads. Large extended family.

A Memorial Service will be held in Ok City, 3:00pm, Friday May 18 at Southwest Baptist church, 1300 SW 54th.

Also, later same day, a service in Lawton Friday evening at the Lawton Country Club. 6:00pm ~ 8:00pm. The family hopes classmates and friends will be able to join them in remembering Roger.

Arrangements are being handled by Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral and no details as to a service at this time. Ritter Gray (as of this writing) has not posted anything on their web site. Extended obit in Sunday Constitution, (May 12 - pg 7-A). www.grayfuneral.com
