Mary Sue Silk will celebrate her 90th birthday on Jan. 3. If you would like to send her a greeting, her mailing address is: 7201 SW 11th Street, Lawton, OK 73505. I am sure she would be delighted!

Sorry to report the passing of L.S. "Skip" Grundman, 72, of Lawton. Skip passed on Dec. 22. He was born in NY and grew up in New Jersey before moving to Lawton in 1949 and graduated LHS, class '55.He is survived by former wife, Patricia; four children - Mark, Kelly, Dawn, Tracy.Services will be at 2:00pm, Tuesday Dec. 29, Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel. Well, I spoke tooooooo soon about snow and bad weather.....someplace else! Christmas Eve we had one of the worst 'blizzards' I can remember in Lawton, America! The wind was horrible, it blew, howled, 40-60mph for hours! A 'white out'.... at sea level yet! It was something and dumped 6-8-10 inches of snow in our area in a fairly short period of time! More in OKC and Wichita Falls was hit hard also. Roads closed, power off, businesses closed! Man! What a storm. Started about midnight Wednesday night.....blew through by about 4:30 Thursday afternoon and Santa loaded up for his deliveries! Numerous couldn't get home for Christmas and that made it tough for some. Christmas Day brought sunshine and shovels out of the garage and things slowly melting and back to 'normal'.Bracing for more snow on Tuesday!
I had several write to let me know that Jean (Shanklin) Orr is class of '62. I'm sorry I do not have an update on her. Will try to find out how she is doing.
My sister-in-law, Lugene (Williams) Mushrush, remains in ICU in Houston Methodist, but is better. Some have emailed on how to contact her and the easiest....she now has her 'computer' - IPOD thing, and if you would like to email her - . Lugene is class '54.
'Boucher Was Dominating Hurler at LHS'....so reads the headline. This Sundays weekly column by Constitution sports writer Herb Jacob - Where Are They Now?' - is all about '59 classmate Jerry Boucher and the Wolverines rise to become the dominant baseball team in Oklahoma. Other names mentioned: '59-ers David Hillis, Oscar Pickering, Charles Brooks, Billy Dayton; plus, Bob Howard, Jimmy Bohl, Gale McCray, Hartwell Menefee, Johnny Parrish, and Dennis Blanton. Also, coach Bob 'Peewee' Williams. Great read about great times, page 3-C, Sunday Constitution, Dec. 27.

From the eMail bag - Great Christmas story:
"I wanted to tell you about my Dad, Art Farrington. He has been a Shrine Santa for over 30 years and is planning on retiring at the ripe old age of 90. He and another Shriner friend started the unit to raise money for the crippled children and burn units supported by the Shriners. They have raised over $100,000! I'm so proud of him. One day I asked him why he wasn't Santa when I was a child. He said, "I was, I just didn't have the suit for another 50 years!". Ouch!! KSWO will be doing a piece on him Christmas Eve. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas -- I will be with Santa!"
Linda Farrington, class '66

So sorry for this familys loss.

I had a chance meeting earlier this evening with Jerry Orr. Jerry is married to Jean (Shanklin). He told me Jean suffered a seizure about 9 days ago, her heart stopped. She was revived by paramedics, but some loss of oxygen to her brain was sustained (amount of time not known). She has been in a coma since then & is in ICU at Memorial Hosp here in Lawton. He said the prognosis was not particularly good and asked for any who would to please include Jean in their prayers. And remember Jerry too. This is very difficult for him.
Jean has a twin sister Jane, LHS grads but do not know year. Also, brothers Jack, Bob, Jerry. A brother Bill and a sister Judy are deceased. All LHS grads.

And, we would also appreciate your prayers on behalf of my Bills sister - Lugene (Williams) Mushrush. She has a very serious chronic lung condition and was admitted to a hospital in Houston earlier this evening. She is in ICU also.

Earl Barton & Marilyn are with daughter in VA and report some 20" of snow!!!! Kay (Pavillard) and Jerry Otis send pictures of new triplet grandkids out in first snow of great depth......and our daughter Leslie in Boston area sends pictures of new puppy out in first snow! Kay (Crossland) sent snow pictures also from her kids areas. Beautiful snow....especially when its somewhere else!

Charles Ellenbrooks' monthly article in the Lawton Constitution today - Dec. 22 - is a great article/interview with 86 year old Arlie Wood. Wood reminisces about the days when his father helped build the road up Mt. Scott and 'hard time' Christmases of the '30's. Great read. Page 1B.

Note: Arlie Wood attended Lincoln School, dropped out of LHS in 1941 to try and get into the Army. He later received his GED and recently on his 86th bday received a diploma from LHS.

Do you know.....'Rudolph the RED nosed Reindeer' is 60 years old this Christmas! Younger folks may not know the name Gene Autry, but it was Autrys writing and recording that made Rudolph famous and Autrys' remains the most popular rendition of the song. Along with Autrys recording of 'Here Comes Santa Claus'....Autry was dubbed the "Christmas Cowboy". Happy Birthday Rudy and thank you Gene Aurty! Listen and/or sing along with Gene at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLf0DDt3Xiw&feature=related

I personally believe global warming is a hoax, but some are genuinely concerned. With all the media coverage, a picture is still worth a 1,000 words and I thought a picture of global warming protestors would be of interest. (above).

Next few days but will busy for all. I hope you have a wonderful holiday of family and love! I have 23 coming for Christmas dinner Friday! Everyone brings tasty morsels, so works well. Needless to say, I will not be on computer much, so try not to do anything 'newsworthy'.

I want to wish all my classmates and friends a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Georgia

The 'circulation' for LHS News continues to grow. I am happy you enjoy the news and I enjoy hearing from so many of you across the US of A, Germany, Africa, and pen-pals it has created in other areas of the world! Aren't computers grand!

From the eMail bag:
"The LHS fight song has been going round and round in my head since yesterday. As I recall, the last line as I remember it, differs from Fullerton's. I think it should be all our loyal fans go marching back to the bar for more beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer . . .? then begin again."
Scotty '56 [Scott Brown]

"I am quite familiar with the Polka Dot house. It belonged to Whit Ozier who was the Youth Leader at Centenary Methodist Church downtown. He also sponsored the senior high Methodist Youth Fellowship and we had many a Sunday night at his house after MYF Meetings and Church. I was lucky to have my father stationed at Fort Sill and we went to Centenary (my years were 1955-1957). We all looked forward to those gatherings."
David B. Craig, '57

And, a little bit of a differing remembrance on the polka-dot house:
"The story I remember about the house was as follows: The owner of the house delivered bread and parked his bread truck in front his home. Neighbors complained and said the truck distracted from the homes and did not blend it with the neighborhood. Since he delivered Wonder Bread, he painted the same colorful circles on his home that were on his truck! That took the focus off of the truck!!!"
Paul Porter, '64, Atascadero, CA
Paul emailed again that he thought someone named 'Martin' had owned the house on 17th. Maybe after Oziers? Anyone know?

"Happy Holidays to all LHS Classmates. Just a reminder for all of you to make a note on your calender for April 10, 2010 for our ALL CLASSMATES REUNION. We will start the planning after the holidays. If any of you have any ideas, your input will be greatly appreciated. AGAIN HAPPY HOLIDAYS!"

Lawton Public Schools formerly turned control of the old High School/Central building to the City of Lawton on Friday. The school still owns the property, but the building - which has undergone extensive renovation - will now be managed by the city and is officially Lawton City Hall. The ceremony included former students and teachers.

btw...Fred Fitch - LHS '65 and brother of '59 classmate Carlana (Fitch) Murray, has just been elected Mayor of the 'home-town'. Fred is a longtime business owner and will bring knowledge and expertise of private sector business to the city office!

Christmas Treat! Last year about this time, I ran the recipe for Aunt Bills Brown Candy. (considered by myself and most others who have had joy of munching, to be the 'KING' of home-made candies). I had much response about it and some have asked recently. So....if you have interest, the recipe is re-posted on the WolverNet blog. Enjoy! (see post below)

Well, temp in teen digits night or two.... I would say...winter has arrived! Stay warm....Georgia

Aunt Bills Brown Candy ~ Oklahoma Tradition!

The recipe for Aunt Bills made its debut during The Oklahoman and Times - WKY Cooking School held in October 1932.
The candy was an instant success/favorite. This soft, nutty, and somewhat crumbly southern delight is a cross between praline and fudge and is the ideal holiday treat.
Although some persons have made it with no help, two people are reccommended - especially to beat it. Makes 30 pieces.

Ingredients:
3 cups sugar, divided
1 cup half and half
1/4 cup water
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pound pecans, toasted, coarsely chopped (about 4 cups)

Preparation:
Butter 8x8x2-inch metal baking pan. Combine 2 cups sugar and half and half in heavy large saucepan. Stir occasionally over low heat until sugar dissolves. Set aside.
Bring remaining 1 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water to boil in heavy medium saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Increase heat; continue boiling without stirring until syrup turns deep amber, brushing sides of pan with wet brush and swirling pan, about 8 minutes.
Immediately pour caramel syrup into half and half mixture in large saucepan (mixture will bubble). Stir constantly over medium-low heat until caramel dissolves. Attach candy thermometer to side of pan. Increase heat to medium. Continue cooking and stirring until mixture registers 244°F, about 12 minutes.

Remove from heat and immediately stir in baking soda (mixture will foam slightly). Add butter and stir to melt. Let stand without stirring until mixture cools to 160°F, about 20 minutes. Mix in vanilla.Using large wooden spoon, stir constantly until candy begins to thicken and loses its gloss, 4 to 5 minutes. (usually takes two people to beat). Mix in nuts (candy will be very stiff). Scrape candy into prepared pan.
Using wet fingertips, press candy firmly into pan. Cool completely, then cut into 30 squares.

YUM! YUM!

This email on the 'song' was from James Byrn, forwarded to me by James Fullerton....I remember the song and sure numerous of you do also. I remember the 'faculty' made 'us' stop singing it at pep rallys and such, don't think they appreciated it! haha! Current students don't seem to know or have heard of it?
To the tune of the Notre Dame fighting song.....anyone know who came up with this little 'ditty'...?
"Cheer, cheer, for old Lawton High, bring on the whiskey, bring on the rye; send a freshman out for gin and don't let a sober sophmore in. [O honey] We never stagger, we never fall; we sober up on wood alcohol...while our loyal fa-cul-ty lies drunk in the study hall.....beer, beer, beer......"

"Thanksgiving in Chili is a little different. The only turkey I had was my traveling companion Johnny. We went to the beach, had a beautiful lunch. It is a diverse and beautiful country. and cheap! Hope all of you had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. Love, Enoch Daniel"
(Dan Glascock, '59)

"I was a cheerleader in Sr year with Gwen Patterson. Also went with the Spanish Club to Mexico City between Sophomore and Jr years with Ada K. "Ms. Knight" a bunch of parents and our "Youth Ambassador Club". I am right now in Guatemala on a mission trip with 4 others from our church in Yucca Valley, CA. Just got here Saturday morning and have been out to the "out country" where we are checking out the water filtration that were installed and some have a few problems. Also our 2 missionaries called "Servants 4 Him" have built cook stoves with stove pipes to clear the smoke from the huts. We saw several and also saw one family of 22 people who are waiting for a cook stove. She showed us the floor pit fire where she kneels to make their food. A stove costs our missionaries $150 just for material and they do all the labor. We also had a kids activity and sang 2 songs with them. I got a video of that. You can not imagine the poverty of people or the way of life in this country. Usually I just hang out in Yucca Valley, CA with Norma Lee (Curry) Gardner also class of 56. We live in the same Sr Mobile Home Park. I do enjoy your newsletter. Thanks a lot."
Charlotte E. Magill, '56

Georgia, I also remember the polka dot house. I rode the 16th St. bus to & from LJHS.

A message I received from 'LHS'........
I don't know how many of you noticed the ad in the paper from U.S. Cellular this weekend but they have launched a contest that they held last year too. The top 10 schools that receive the most votes will receive $100,000! I think if we all find ways to advertise this to our e-mail contacts, Facebook contacts, and alumni we could make this happen!
Here is what you must do to vote for Lawton High School:
You must be 18 to vote. You must personally go into the U.S. Cellular Office [in Lawton - 1203 NW Sheridan] and pick up a voting card. Each card has a different voting code and only one vote per e-mail account. The voting started on November 13 and ends at Midnight on January 15, 2010. Please let all of our students know about this. If they aren't 18 and have an e-mail account, their parents can vote. You can watch the progress of the top 20 schools on the U.S. Cellular Website each day. As of last night, the top school had only 75 votes, so we could get in first place today! You can get a few [cards] each time you visit and hand them to students that can't visit the store.

Note: I was told, LHS plans to use any monies 'won' to replace seats in LHS auditorium.

Sorry to report loss of classmates......
Linda 'Nana' (Porter) Foster, 61, of Lawton. Linda passed November 19. She attended Taft Elementary, Tomlinson Jr High, and LHS. Do not know year she graduated. Linda is survived by husband Dennis; two daughters; two sons; brother Joe.

From the eMail bag:
H-E-L-P! Marcille (Burns) Covey has been meeting with the LHS Historicial Committee and they need help! When did LHS adopt the WOLVERINE as the school mascot? Anyone with info.....greatly appreciate.

Just wanted to let you know my two latest novels are now available. By clicking the link below, you can see excerpts and video previews of all 5 of my books from Vanilla Heart Publishing. I'm also working on another novel, to be released this spring; I believe it's also included in the videos.
Also will be focused on re-writing my two non-fiction books, one about military brats and one about lupus.
But first, I'm taking time out to go to CA for Thanksgiving at Terri and Mike's new house in Los Gatos. Haven't seen them since this time last year.

...."I moved in my house here in Frisco Lakes, TX, Nov 9. I really like it here. So many people from all over the country have decided to settle here. Sunday there was a block party for the ladies and there were not 2 people from the same state! I am wading thru the boxes in the garage and little by little getting things in their place, either in the house or on the side of the garage for consignment store. I thought I down sized, but not enough. I bought a neat Club Car golf cart (it is between Crimson and Orange in color so I guess I am politically correct) and have been all over the development. It is just beautiful at sunset on the golf course and around the lake."
Mary Ann (Goode) Pursley

Several great emails (remembrances) from Verna Le (Brammer) Zeiders:
How I enjoy the e-mails. I am going to tell my Aunt Billie, class'44 about the April reunion. I've been bringing her and husband, Bob R. Williams (Pee Wee) to Lawton the past 3 yrs on or about Memorial Day to all the cemeteries. She and her sister, Bettie Foster Sanders were cheerleaders for 2 yrs during their high school yrs, in same class due to diphtheria with Billie. How I adored them, they were like older sisters to me as they are only 8 and 9 yrs older.
Bob was a coach for many, many yrs and retired as head of the Coaches Ass. in Ok, and they are now 84 and 85 yrs, still going strong. Aunt Billie works in the yard for hours during the spring and summer. Surely, they will want to come to that reunion. I'd probably spend the night with them and leave from the Shawnee area on the 10th. T.P. Brammer was my Dads' cousin, 2 of many Brammer cousins at the time, they are spread all over now. I'm thinking they were pretty ornery from the stories they told at the family reunions. Thanks for the mails.
Verna Le Zeiders.

The paint job on Whit Oziers house continues to receive comments:

I always thought Whit Ozier's polka dot house was the coolest thing about Lawton. I still tell people about it.
Gale McCray

I can attest to Whit Ozier's polka-dot house - it was grey with chartreuse polka-dots and the polka-dots were various sizes. When we first moved to Lawton in 1950, we lived at 1705 Cherry and Whit and Mary Virginia and their boys lived on the east side of 17th street where it intersects with Cherry street. All the kids in the neighborhood were just dumbfounded (and probably the adults were, too!) when he painted it. Tex and Irene Harris and their boys (Ken Harris is their son - I think he is a judge now) lived at 1702 Cherry and Tex asked Whit why he painted it that way and Whit said , "well, I've just always wondered what it would be like to live in a polka-dot house." We moved out to 2205 Cheyenne in 1952 and I honestly can't remember if the house was still polka-dot when we moved or if he had already "redecorated" by then.
Carlana (Fitch) Murray

Note: Yes, Ken Harris is a Judge now but his early career started as a delivery boy working for my Bill at Earl Drug. Great kid! Well, guess not kid anymore!

"Also, would add for defense of Whit Ozier that he had a serious side, also. When I was in LHS, I baby sit for the Ozier's....really nice family. Also, Whit was our high school Sunday School teacher at Centenary while I was in high school...excellent teacher. Thanks."
Pat (Banks) White, class '52

I baby sat for the boys. Whit's house was gun metal gray with great big chartreuse circles all over it. You can just imagine being there late at night the boys were asleep and a car would pull up in the drive way and turn on their bright lights to see the spots house. Scary.
Carrol (Anderson) McDevitt

I was thinking of Whit Ozier also. He was a great gimmick man and was an active supporter of youth functions. I remember him having his house painted polka-dotted.... I think pink with blue dots but not sure. Must have been in the 1953 - 1955 era since I rode the 16th Street bus home from LJHS and the route took me past his home. Warm days with cool nights and clear blue skies on the Mississippi Gulf Coast!
Joe Scott

'59 classmate Ed Coulson sent me a picture that he found in going through 'old' boxes of treasures his mom had kept. GREAT fun picture of those who would become the class of 1959. Date indicates probably fifth/sixth grade? Sadly, classmates Bobby Snow and Bobby Newman are deceased. Really appreciate Ed for sharing. (see above).

I doubt additional 'news' will go out before Thanksgiving......so, I will take this opportunity to wish each of you a wonderful day of family and love. Georgia

Some consensus from David Leister, Dan Glascock, and others that it was in deed Whit Ozier eating the looonnngggg sandwich in Hardy Suggs window!!!

And, some had asked, yes, Whit is deceased. Joe Scott and Mike Wyant both remembered that Whit Ozier painted his house with polka-dots! On purpose!

Speaking of '59 classmate Dan Glascock....he is off for several weeks in Rio, Santiago, and Buenos Aries. For any who flunked geography...that's South America!!! Ole~!

From the eMail bag:
This invitation to all from '59 classmate Karen (Choney) Culloty:
"All friends and classmates of Errol Choney are invited to join the family at for a memorial reception scheduled for Errol on Friday November 27, 1:00pm -5:00pm at the Comanche Elder Center, 1107 SW 'H' Avenue in Lawton.
The memorial is in keeping with our tradition of honoring our loved one a year after their passing. We will be serving refreshments and coffee for those already tired of turkey. It is also a time for us to gather and remember Choney and share stories, anecdotes of his life. He was so loved by so many." Karen

Errol was Karens brother and LHS class '57.

"Thank you so much for putting this together for all of us that had lost touch with LHS classmates and teachers. I saw the name Dick Neptune and oh so many memories came rushing in. He was a great influence in my late husbands life. He sparked an interest in photography that led him, Gary Fults, to become a success at Eastman Kodak Company. We met in the photography class and Camera Club. We married in 1960, had 2 great sons and all of this began in Mr. Neptune's class. Thank you, Mr. Dick Neptune, for all you did to help us improve our lives.
Sandra (Cooper) Fults
Note: Sandra is class 1961 and Gary Fults was class 1960. They retired to Center City, FL in 1999. Sadly Gary passed in 2002.

A Friday night reception at the Oklahoma State Capitol, formally opened the exhibit, 'Fingers and Brushes: Improvisational Landscapes', an art exhibit by Lawton artist Jack Bryan, former head of the Cameron Art Dept. Dr. Bryans exhibit is displayed in the East Gallery of the Capitol and will hang through January 3, 2010. The East Gallery is open daily M-F and there is no admission charge. Jack is married to Judy (Warkentin), LHS class '63.

Major congrats to '59 classmate Roberta (Wheeler) Hadley and hubby Craig who were recently honored by their children with a reception and 50's themed dance as they celebrated their Golden 50th. The Hadleys married November 2, 1959. They have one son, two daughters, 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren. Craig is LHS class '60.

If you would help.....the newly formed Historical Lawton High Preservation Committee continues in their efforts to collect memorabilia for the archive room (under construction) in the Old High School (Central). This room will be used to display the 'history' of LHS and the students who attended. If you have memorabilia or a much needed (ca$h) donation....please contact the Museum of the Great Plains (580) 581- 3460.
And, if you would like to be a part of this committee, they meet at noon on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, at the Museum. Call!

Photo Gallery Update: I have just added the pictures that I took at the classes '49-'52 reunion this past September. I did not take many, so if others have photos they would share, please send them to me. And, I do apologize as I do not have names on some of them as I am not sure who they are...so if you can help in that dept...would appreciate.
Also, have added (at the end) a few more pictures to the class '59 reunion pictures courtesy Bevery (Spradlin) Raley. Good pictures! I still have a LOT of '59 pictures to get on the blog. Patience please!

Dick Neptune sent me a great message on getting OLD. Not sure why he sent it to moi....well, he was gonna send but he couldn't remember what it was...ahhahahhahahahha...that's the joke! I'm worried!

"My husband and I just returned from a trip to Tennessee to see the fall foliage. To our surprise as we were driving from Missouri into Northeastern Oklahoma we saw some of the most beautiful colors, prettier than Tennessee. Next year we will just travel to our home state."
Kay (Bennett) Ray, Class of 62.

Also emails from Mike Wyant; Frankie Kinderman; Kay & Jerry Otis - Kay has been fighting some kind of 'flu'; Jerry (Sasser) Childs is currently visiting in the states but she is also fighting some cold/flu symptoms. Hope all well soon!

btw....Mike Wyant and Otis Bowles thought the DJ in Hardy Suggs window might have been Whit Ozier????

'55 classmate, Dr. Sam Hamra, well known plastic surgeon (Dallas), has just published a new book - 'The Facelift Letdown: When Results Don't Meet Expectations.' Great 'review' and wonderful picture of Sam at: <http://www.aesthetictrends.com/news/?p=605>
The New York Times also picked up on the book:<http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/29/fashion/29Skin.html?_r=1&emc=eta1> I plan to read it! Never know when might need something propped up, lifted up, most anytime! And Sam's an expert!

btw....just reminiscing...we grew up together in the old neighborhood....Sam and his sister 'Sissie' lived directly across the alley from me....on Arlington, Nancy Joyner lived next door to Sam on the east & Babs Yarmuk and Marilyn Lewis lived directly across the street (north). That's when Sam, by his own account, "took aim" and shot Marilyn in the b**t with his BB gun! Who knew that one day he would be able to 'fix that divit'. Come a long way since those great days!

The LHS Class of 1960 will hold their 50th reunion next October 8 and 9, 2010. They are trying to locate as many classmates as possible to be able to keep them updated as plans are finalized. Jim Whisnand has graciously volunteered to keep a master list of contact information for the Class of '60. Classmates who have not been receiving emails from Jim should contact him at Jswhizcal@aol.com and give him your e-mail address, postal address and phone number.

And, don't forget the ALL class LHS reunion already set for Saturday April 10, 2010, (first Saturday after Easter), same location (Old Plantation) at Medicine Park. It was a great success and FUN this past April.
Will keep all posted on these and other events!

Still beautiful weather and fall colors continue! ....... Georgia

Yours truly has been on a few days 'sabbatical' as various 'chores' had piled up and needed closure. Now, getting back to 'news' and other similar type endeavors! Hope to have additional pictures posted on the blog....soon!

I received a call today from Barbara Kirkpatrick, class '53, as she wanted to inform me of the passing of her sister Linda (Kirkpatrick) Patterson. Linda (class 1968) and her husband Charles (Pat), were both killed in a trailer fire in Lawton this past Friday, October 30. I had read of the tragedy in the Lawton paper but did not realize it was a classmate lost in the fire. Pat was not from Lawton. Barbara said at this time no services are planned, she just wanted classmates to know of the loss.
I know our heartfelt sympathies are with Barbara and 4 other siblings and family during this terrible tragedy.

Sorry to report the passing of Mavis (Koontz) Allen, 91, of Lawton. Mrs. Allen passed on October 23. She is mom of '59 classmate Diane (Herder) Lewis Lastinger and also daughter Kay Herder. Services were October 28 in Lawton.
Extended obit and guest book at: www.beckerfuneral.com

Murdoch Matthew had been trying to find classmate Joan R. (Pace) Hanna. Otis Bowles researched and discovered that Joan had been living in Colorado but sadly, he also discovered she just recently passed on October 8 at the Colorado State Veterans Center. I believe Joan was class '49.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life was held Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Emmanuel Chapel in South Fork.
Survivors include by her husband, Robert Hanna of Homelake; sons, Greg (Barbara) Emminizer of Benicia Calif., Guy L. (Heidi) Freeman of Glendale Ariz., Tunis Hanna of Del Norte and Edward O. Hanna of Justin, Texas. Strohmayer's Funeral Home was in charge of services.

From the eMail bag:
David Dom asked about a 10 foot sandwich being eaten in Hardy Suggs Music store window.....here are some responses to that question:

In response to the question David Dom asked about the guy eating a 10 foot long sandwich in the window of Hardy Suggs music store; I remember that he was a disc jockey for KSWO I'm pretty sure, and it was either a bet or a dare for him to do it. I don't remember his name but I do remember he ate it all ! Hope this helps Davids mystery.
Roy House

The sandwich thing... if memory serves me, was a kswo radio contest of some sort. The loser was a disc jockey who had to eat all of the 10 ft. sandwich.
Steve Parker

I think that the man eating the sandwich was Ron Kirby ( I'm not positive) who was a disc jockey for KSWO radio at that time. However I do remember that about that time there was some kind of promotion or contest on KSWO radio and it culminated with the sandwich eating.
Ron Snyder

I (georgia), called Ron Kirby and asked if he knew anything about the 'sandwich' incident. Ron, a longtime DJ/newsperson for KSWO, said he did not arrive in Lawton until about 1962. And while he had 'heard' of the incident, it was not him eating the sandwich. We talked and wondered if it might have been CJ McDonald? The mystery continues.

Marcille (Burns) Sutherland Covey, class '52, told a great story in remembering TP Brammer...I asked her to write it down so I could share......thank you Marcille:
" My parents, Dorothy & Raymond Burns, and Alma & T.P. Brammer were members of the Builders Sunday School Class at Centenary Methodist. When Buryl & I were to be married in 1953 Mother took me out to Ft. Sill where T.P. had his photography studio to have pictures made of me in my wedding dress which Mother had made. The skirt of the dress was a complete circle which impressed T.P. He told us that he had always wanted to take a picture of someone wearing a circular dress that could be spread out all around them and he asked if I would let him take that picture...which I agreed to pose for. Even though it is black& white that 8x10 picture was "special".
In 1957 T.P. opened his photography and camera shop in Lawton on C avenue...as a part of his grand opening celebration he sponsored a jingle contest. (I think that the first two lines were provided and the remaining lines were to be provided by the contestants.)
Anyway, I was a very excited person when I received the call that I had won the contest. The prize was a Bell & Howell movie camera and I put it to good use taking movies of my three sons as they were growing up. That old film was converted to VHS tape years later....and now it is time to get it converted to DVD!!!
At T.P.'s funeral this afternoon we were reminded that T.P. & Alma took great pride in their annual Christmas cards that featured pictures of their family. The cards were put in the mail the day after Thanksgiving so that they would be the first Christmas cards their friends received each year!!! I remember that my parents looked forward to those cards...and each year that card would be the first of the season."

Appreciate '59 classmate Ed Adams for sending these pictures (above) from his home area over Poteau way. (Eastern Oklahoma).

It has been a beautiful (colorful) fall. The past few days have been just gorgeous. All Hallows Eve was PERFECT! Hope you got lots of treats!

Regards.......Georgia

So very sorry to hear of this loss.

From the eMail bag:
I've been e-mailing with Ruth "Molly" Nichols, class of 1949, and she's been wanting to contact her old friend Joan Pace. I see Joan's picture in the 1948 Wolverine Lore as a Junior, but if she's in the 49 yearbook, I've missed her. Joan was a Ft. Sill kid, like Molly. Wonder if anyone on the Wolvernet has news of her.
Murdoch Matthew

Georgia, your Bill is not the only one disappointed. Even though I live over a thousand miles from Norman, I have faithfully followed the Sooners for over 50 years. When the game's not on TV here, I can now follow it on line. I also follow Oklahoma State. My dad used to take me to Lewis Field for the home games back in the early 50's when we lived there. That and Hank Iba coached OSU (Oklahoma A&M) Basketball.I have a question that maybe some one in your reading area may know the answer to.
Back in 1959, Larry Lindgren and I were carpooling to work and there was a man sitting in the window of Hardy Suggs Music store eating a 10 foot long sandwich. Why? We stopped and looked but that early in the morning the store was closed, so I never found out why. Which brings up another question. Does any one know what happened to Larry Lindgren, class of '58?
David Dom

'News' has been steady lately...but this is all for now......Regards......Georgia

Great story on the three and another '33 classmate Harold Short in the Lawton Constitution on May 25, 2008.

Another great article by Charles Ellenbrook in Saturday (Oct. 17) Lawton Constitution. Charles writes a monthly article - Wichita Mountains Field Notes. This article (full page - page 1 section B) is about Medicine Park and the surrounding area and the beauty and color(s) of the autumn/fall. Several beautiful pictures. For those who just attended the class '59 reunion (Sat night at Medicine Park), you got a preview of Bath Lake, the Falls, and the walkway. It's a wonderful time of the year, makes you want to be outside. The areas around Medicine Creek are wonderful to sit out/picnic and enjoy natures show.

I have written a couple of re-caps of the recent 1959 - 50th reunion. I did not send them out in LHS news as somewhat lengthy and I thought some might not be interested? But....I did decide to post them on the blog. So, if any would like to read comments and other notes about the reunion, you may do so. Two separate posts!

I hope those (class '54, et al) who just got together in Sedona, AZ will show (pictures) and tell (who was there and what they did)!

Hope you will take a minute to visit link below. UTube video tribute to the Murrah Bldg. Bombing Memorial in OKC. Poignant photographs of an American tragedy. The girl singing is my niece Tara Gill, daughter of brother Tim & wife Terri. Do not know person who put this together and Tara did not know they were using her tape until someone told her about the post on UTube. She has been studying music - for several years now - and she is a Junior at...where else....LHS!

Sharing picture (above) that '59 classmate Richard 'Dick' Densley sent of himself and his new squeeze, Sammy!

Well, my Bill is most disappointed.....he had hoped the Sooners would kick some major Longhorn rump roast...but alas....not to be! Very sorry QB Sam Bradford was injured again. Bummer Sooner!

The rain finally quit a few days ago in the 'home town' so we are drying out and enjoying the sunny fall days while putting out jack-o-lanterns, ghouls and goblins, getting ready for the little intruders on October 31!

Regards to all.........Georgia

More '59 - 50th Reunion Re-cap......
Originally sent October 18

I have received reunion photos from Preston McPhail, Dan McBee, and Patty Parker. I appreciate their sharing and will be getting some of those posted to the website soon. Have already posted those from Joel Boyd.

Correction: I wrote that Tink (Belland) Glenn lives in MO! MY bad. She lives in Kansas...!

Received this note from Ed Harp, class of 1954:
I just realized you achieved Golden Wolverine status this year and I apologize for not thinking of it sooner. In my defense, I’m very old. Congratulations and welcome to the ranks of Golden Wolverines, marking fifty years since you and your classmates graduated from Lawton High!
Best regards, Ed

btw...Ed's not that old! He coined the phrase 'Golden Wolverine' and 'we' graciously accept the honor! THANKS Ed. Ed also does a great monthly newsletter for class of 1954 which also includes other classmate news. If you would like to receive Eds news, email him at edharp@swbell.net

Reminds me of..."All that glitters is not gold, often you have heard that told......." ONLY Shakespeare I remember from Mrs. Johnstons freshman English class!
OK,OK......back to re-cap!

Memory Books are on the way. If you ordered/paid for a Memory Book and couldn't attend reunion..... watch your mail box. They went out on Saturday - media mail!
More comments:

Karen and I had a super time and enjoyed catching up with everyone. Lawton has changed and yet something are the same. I had to introduce my wife to Johnson's Bakery and Wayne's Drive In.
Preston McPhail

Thanks for the wonderful job you and the committee did on the reunion. I know I enjoyed every minute. I was unable to attend the other items on the menu Saturday morning. As I had to rest for the evening program. It was wonderful all the courtesies that were extended to me.
Jerry Morgan

So sorry that we could not make it to the reunion. I heard that it was great fun!Stephannie (Lester) Beatty

Theoretically this e-mail is going to Georgia Gill Williams and it's intent is to express my appreciation to you/her and all the others who contributed to making our 50th LHS Class reunion such a great success. I'm sure it was a lot of work and did a masterful job.
Ron Snyder

So far, Saturday night is the highlight of my year.
Beverly (Spradlin) Raley

Georgia, I want to thank the committee for all the hard work they did in making our 50th reunion such a success and a fun time. I saw so many of my neighborhood friends and classmates that I had not seen since we graduated and had wondered at times where they where. I was so good to see everyone. I wouldn't have missed the "Class of 1959" 50th Reunion for anything. It was not mentioned, but there was a large group of classmates that toured Lawton High School on Friday morning and got to see alot of improvements that have been made. Brought back a lot of memories and those halls look so much smaller than when we were in school there. Thanks again.
Judy (House) Hargrove

....I hope all these comments reinforce how grateful the class is for all your work. Even though I could not be there, I appreciate all you did to keep us involved. Not only did I hear from classmates what a good time they had, but I also heard from several parents of 59 who told me how much their out-of-town children had enjoyed the two days. Linda (Hawkins) MoonJerry and I had a fabulous time - it was so wonderful seeing everyone. Our only complaint was that there was not enough time to visit long enough with everyone. We enjoyed every moment. Thanks to all of you who made this reunion possible. It is evident how much work went into the reunion and WE APPRECIATE IT!!!! More than words can say. We came home with some wonderful old memories and created some new ones. Again, thank you all so much. Love,
Kay (Pavillard) & Jerry Otis

Words cannot express my delight in seeing all the reunion photo's. So many familiar faces and faces I had to rely on the captions to recognize. Everyone looked so happy which showed how much fun they were having. For sure I'hope there will be another Reunion. I regret so much missing all the fun and having to re-introduce myself to everyone. Thank you Georgia, for what you do to help us keep us close tabs of home, you have no idea what it means to us.
Karen (Choney) Culloty

I sent the re-cap - first one and this one - to just class 1959 but did decide to post on blog. So...if you want to re-read, will be there!

For the committee....gjw

To: '59 Classmates ~ Re-Cap of the 1959 - 50th Reunion.
Originally sent October 11

As was stated in LHS News......A great turn-out of over 200 (both nights) produced a lot of reminiscing with old friends/classmates; visiting and picture taking! Wolverines from 19 states - PLUS Oklahoma - and one classmate from Germany (Charles Brooks) came home to join the party! 29 grads from Texas, 38 from Oklahoma (not Lawton) and 35 from Lawton! If YOU weren't there .....kick yourself! REAL hard!

Currently working on pictures for a slide show on the WolverNet blog - Coming soon! (done).
The lighting at both events was not very good (as far as taking pixs) but think still managed to get some good ones. The independent contractor who was there on Saturday night video-ing and talking w/classmates....will be in touch with you to see if you want to purchase a video? You are under NO obligation to do so. I was hoping they would send one we could watch to see how it is...?

Those who could not attend but did order a Memory Book, including those who had ordered one and at last minute couldn't make it.....Memory Books will go in mail, hopefully this week. Will let people know when they go out!
Beverly (Spradlin) did a super job on the books! About 50-60 went on the tour of the old High School/Central on Friday! Minette Page was very happy to have so many interested. And, about 50+ toured the 50's car museum on Saturday morning and Billy Beville enjoyed talking about his super vintage cars. Great turnout for both events and we appreciate Minette and Billy for their time and gracious 'tours'.

Don't have numbers but I know several attended the Pep Rally and assembly and the game Friday night. The Museum facility on Friday night was lovely! Weather perfect, made it most enjoyable to be outside on the patio area as well as inside. We appreciate classmate Rex Givens help with the Museum. Music Hall at Medicine Park proved equally great place for the Saturday night event! 'We' feel, couldn't have gone any better! Special thanks to classmate John Hammond for the great picture name tags! Also, very special thanks to another Wolverine (class '83), Chris Rabon, for his help - technical, musical, and otherwise - in producing the DVD! The DVD played through the evening at Medicine Park.

Door prize for coming the longest distance went to Charles Brooks. Door prizes also won by Maurice LaFonte; Tink (Belland);

Prizes? - We had books about 'Craterville Park'; '1959:Year Everything Changed'; and Waynes T-Shirts!

Comments from some who attended the reunion......

Just got home from having more fun that I can remember in a long, long time! It was such a great weekend and I still can't get over what a wonderful turnout we had from '59!
Carlana (Fitch) Murray

I can't thank you enough for making our reunion such a success. It was such a joy to reconnect with my past and find my roots again.... And then, to make it possible to stay connected through all the contact information.Let's keep the ball rolling for as long as we can.
David Eugene 'Gene' Morris

note: It was great of Gene to organize those who wanted to attend the Pep assembly and Pep Rally + homecoming game. I know that it was mentioned on the radio broadcast of the Friday night game...that members of the 1959 class were here for reunion and in attendance at the game.

I really enjoyed meeting a lot of people on Friday night, and thanks to all who put in so many hours of hard work!
Wiley Leonard
btw.....Wiley asked if anyone had any information/specifics on what happened to classmate Jimmy Best? All we know is that Jimmy passed in March of 2002.

Thanks for all the work you guys did on throwing a super reunion. We really enjoyed the car museum and I made good use of the gift shop at the Museum of the Great Plains. It's always fun to get back to Lawton and Charles is always happy to see his old friends and classmates (I didn't mean "old" "old"....)
Beverly (Askegreen) Jennings

..... many thanks for all the work you and your team did to make the 50th truly a golden experience! It was great fun to see folks I rarely get to see and those I hadn't seen since graduation that I had a chance to re-meet. Please extend my thanks to all of your team members. Had a good trip home - uneventful (thank you very much), a little rain until I got close to Kansas and then just cloudy. It has begun raining here (followed me I think) and is very cold already. Many thanks again.
Tink (Belland) Glenn (Tink lives in KS)

I have heard nothing but raves about the reunion since I got back. I know I missed something really special. You and your committee did a super job!
Linda (Hawkins) Moon

Georgia, Thanks for all the work you and the rest of the committee did for our 50th reunion. It was all wonderful, the place you chose to have it, the decorations and that great meal. I know it was a lot of work but it was greatly appreciated. Geraldine (Greenlee) Bay

The reunion was great. Good to see everyone and yuck it up about the "good ole days", though I guess that's all relative. At any rate I've attached a few pics from the dinner/dance I thought you might consider including in the follow up.
Joel Boyd
note: Joel sent 5 really good pixs...will be posting along with others on the blog. And, if anyone else has pics...send them to me, will post.

...... A GREAT JOB BOTH NIGHTS. GREAT FUN WAS HAD BY ALL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I KNOW I DIDN'T GET TO VISIT WITH EVERYONE. THANKS AGAIN.
JACK [Atkins]

I enjoyed the reunion although I didn't remember names from the past. I only attended Lawton High two years and left for Germany in February 1960 and didn't return until 1966. I guess I really lost touch with anyone I knew in high school. However, everyone was so friendly that I just enjoyed the two-day reunion! You and the committee did a great job with the planning and execution of the reunion. Hats off to all of you!
Ellouise (Haulcy) Love

Kay (Thomas) Tillman and hubby John were already in Lawton for the reunion and a close friend of Johns passed in Arkansas. They had to leave on Friday morning to go home. Kay emailed how sorry she was to miss the reunion but asked that any who would want to 'visit'...please email her at: jktillman@yahoo.com

You do such a wonderful job of getting all the news out to those everywhere, I so love to receive you messages. I was unable to make the reunion even after having plans made to come, so enjoy hearing all the details. Thank you so much for doing all you do for us away from Lawton. I would really have liked to see and visit all our classmates thought of you all both nights..
God Bless, Ann (Knowles) Saunders

OK....bad news/good news dept.......we searched for classmates as diligently as possible.....but, 'we' most emphatically apologize to classmate James York who we had on the deceased list! Have NO idea where these rumors get started or why 'we' thought him deceased...but the GOOD news is...James is ALIVE and well and please remove his name from any list of deceased you may have. So very sorry for this goof-up! I hope 'we' have not inadvertently 'killed-off' anyone else!

The committee appreciates all those who could be here and made the effort to do so. It was great to see so many classmates and friends and so wonderful that all had a good time.

Joe Osborne, class '60, reminded me of this and it's SO true.....

'We're magnificent, we're divine, we're the class of '59!'

For the committee.......gjw
