Also passing, Jimmy Wayne Moore, 69, of Tulsa. He passed Dec. 19. Jimmy grew up in Lawton and attended Lincoln elementary and Central Jr. High but cannot find him in any LHS Lore books. At some point he moved to Tulsa, so possible he didn't graduate from LHS. Services will be Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Comanche Nation Funeral Home in Lawton, 2:00pm, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Always sad and sorry to have to report losses.

Have received numerous emails with GOOD news...so will share some here:
'59 classmate Phil Wilder and wife Coralyn wrote to say they are especially happy this Christmas as their oldest son Tim is back safely from Iraq. They live in CO where the lows have been 0 and lots of snow.

This from class '57 Bob Atkins......"Just wanted to say Medicine Park is a very nice place. Last month Jana [Bobs wife], her daughter, Kate her husband, Noel and I spent the weekend there at a cabin. We enjoyed perfect late fall weather. Noel and I climbed down into Boulder Canyon and the next day climbed Mt. Scott, that brought back some old memories! The last time I did that was about 50 years ago with Alfred "Sonny" Brown and Bobby Powers. We had a great time wandering the few art and antique stores. I was able to buy an Indian painting by Tim Tate, Doc Tate's son at one of the stores.
Kate and her husband loved eating at Meers so much we had to eat there twice. The Christmas lights around the creek and over the bridge was a very nice sight. If anyone goes to Medicine Park take a little cat food, for a black and white cat seemed to stay at the east end of the bridge.
Merry Christmas. Bob"

Susan (Hankins) Ellington, class '56, is experiencing a lot of snow out her way in NM. Beautiful photo.

Jim Andrews sent great 'singing reindeer'.

Beautiful eCard from Mitch Braley.

Ron Hagler, class '58, sent a Christmas video.....too funny...dog under mistletoe!!!!!

And the girls of '56 who trekked to the Big Apple sent a shot of their adventures! (see at right).l-r: Kay (Kimball) Scott, Yvonne (Anderson) Coombs, and Myrna Kay (Langley) Daley.

I was delighted to get to talk with Pat (Burris) Dean this morning! Pat is class '56 we go way back to 1957 about time she & Paul married. We were neighbors and had a lot of good times. Great to talk with Pat.

The MOST exotic Christmas I know will be Sue (Chalk) Briggs and hubby Scott. They are in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with their daughter, and will spend Christmas eve and Christmas Day camped out in the dessert. Complete with tents, Christmas tree, and traditional Bedouin feast prepared on site! Then on to the 'World's Ugliest Camel' contest/festival. 6,500+ camels valued at over $1 billion dollars, will compete for the title! Not sure what the 'winner' gets?? I look forward to stories and pictures!!!!!

If you think you can sing... or maybe you can......you can now try your talent with 'the King'!!!! As a promotion for the new "Elvis Presley Christmas Duets" album, SONY has created a web site that will allow you to record "Blue Christmas" as a duet with Presley. If you are pleased with the recording...you can send it out as a Christmas eCard. Involves a phone number and code. You can check out the site at: <http://www.singwiththeking.com/>Its a neat site even you don't want to sing....'know what I mean...and I think ya do!'
btw.....I understand the 'duet' album is sold out and very difficult to find! Elvis 'duets' with Martina McBride for one.

btw....still some inquiries to me and Ed Harp about Aunt Bill's Brown Candy so I have posted recipe at the WolverNet blog: http://www.thewolvernet.blogspot.com/

I know I'm tired of this global warming. High was 29 today! Hoping warmer for Christmas Day!
I want to wish each of you a wonderful Christmas filled with family and friends and hope Santa is extra good to you! Regards........ Georgia

Hi Georgia, Also I'm proud to announce that my 40-year old son and his wife (35) had their first baby on November 7, a little girl named "Leyla Catherine Davis", and because this is their first their whole world has been pleasantly turned upside down. My other two grands are 10 and 12, so we have a brand new baby angel for Christmas. Please share, and I wish you and Bill and your family a very blessed Christmas and happy new year. Claudia [(Looney) Davis, class '59]

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR BILL AND GEORGIA from Ralph and Jackie Purvis in San Antonio. Also extend the same greetings to all Wolverines and Lawtonians as we have so much to be thankful this season as always. We are all blessed to have a great family. Just got out the hospital with a severe case of pneumonia, for a week, that came on overnight, called a new term "Community Pneumonia" and went away as fast. They were ready to give me final taps, but this ole trooper, said not so fast and bounced back. The Dr's continue to shake their heads. So I want all to take a moment and give thanks for each of our blessings and what a great family we have in each other. A big thanks to you for all your efforts in keeping all of us informed. Was great hearing about Knif and I wonder where his brother is these days. Bill I remember the holidays when we used to slay the black crappie over the well at the dam! Was so cold the lines froze in the eyelets, ice on the walk and the coffee hot at the dam cafe at Hennesseys. Damn, good ole days and memories. Have a great holiday season and GO SOONERS GO, damn I am proud of our boys!
Love Ralph and Jackie "2008" [Ralph is class '52]"

.....you are the chestnuts by my fire. thanks again for the stirring notes."
Dick [Densley, class '59]

Want to take this opportunity to say "thanks" for the newsletter. I know it takes a lot of work. Have been traveling a lot. Greece this summer. NYC for thanksgiving. Sat five seats away from Hilliary and her semibeautiful daughter. Got back from Cancun last night. Hope all is well with you and Bill and that all of my young old classmates have a blessed and happy Christmas!
Dan [Glascock, class '59]

Also greetings from Randy Parker, Jovita (Reinwand) Weeks, Ed Adams, all class '59; Mike Lehew, class '68, and Ronny Jones, class '55.

Frankie (Ingraham) Kinderman in sunny....'er snowy, CA.......she lives at Lake Arrowhead....says...."Thanks for the news. I just watched the huge plow go by and berm us in. At least I can drive to the Village and get the mail...maybe. I think we are at that age where we don't thrill when it snows several feet deep anymore."

Weather has warmed slightly in the home town...... Be glad when this series of arctic blasts' is over. HO! HO! HO! to all.......Georgia

Also passing, Lee (Darvin) Fox, 58, of Lawton. Lee passed on Dec. 11 and services were in Lawton on Monday Dec. 15. Lee is a LHS grad but not sure year she graduated. She is survived by a daughter Janice Baker and a brother Ernest Darvin, several grand children.
So very sorry for these losses.

Had a lovely Christmas card and great 'newsletter' from '58 classmate Carolyn Swinney. Carolyn moved back to Nashville this past summer after several years in the Ft. Worth/Dallas area. She issued a cordial invitation to any who may be traveling her way.

Bill & I had opportunity to be in Medicine Park this past week-end for a Christmas party at the Music Hall (old skating rink) which was most festive. But what I want to pass along is how beautiful the park looked. It was a rare evening in Oklahoma, no wind, not too cold, and along the river walk (we walked) especially from in front of the Plantation (old hotel) toward the Music Hall the Christmas lights are just beautiful.
Many of the houses are also decorated and its a lovely, quaint, experience. There has been a lot of hard, dedicated work put into the Park the past few years. I highly recommend a drive out some warmer evening if you have opportunity before first of year. I think lights will be up through New Years.
If you want to have dinner while there, the food at the Plantation is good, as is Riverside Cafe. I don't know hours at Riverside Cafe but the Plantation is open 11:00am - 9:00pm, 7 days a week.

Earl Barton sent me this.......love it!
"We'll be friends until we are old and senile. Then we'll be NEW friends."

After being almost 80 Sunday, front blew in at dark and it is bitter cold, overnight 18. About 16 as I write this on Monday night. Gonna be a cold Tuesday morning! Currently dry, but possible sleet coming in tonight. Stay warm, snuggle up with someone you (heart).........Georgia

Received this update from '59 classmate Patsy (Sheppard) just few days ago about hubby Larry Holcomb:
"Larry isn't doing well......we thought that he would be a candidate for the Whipple Procedure that is done by a very well known doctor at OU Med Center. However, due to some complications and much confusion between all the different teams of drs........they have now decided against the Whipple Procedure and will only do chemo. That is not the answer we were hoping for......pancreatic cancer is so aggressive and unless caught in the early stages by sheer accident because there is no testing for it. Chemo doesn't do a lot, just slows down the growth some.
He is beginning to have some very intense pain......I am in the process of calling our original dr. that referred us to OU Med Center and see if I can get him to get us in with an oncologist earlier than the OU oncologist. Please feel free to share the info on Larry with all of our LHS classmates. We can never have enough prayers in our lives now. Pat"

In addition, I know that Pat is recovering from recent knee replacement surgery and has been on a walker. So, please join me in keeping both in your prayers.

We should have gone to Wayne Kniffin's ("Kniff's") for Thanksgiving! He emailed they had 35# of turkey (2 birds). And trimmins galore They had about 30+ people so they wouldn't have noticed a few more! haha!
Wayne - class '52 - & wife Judy live in Michigan.

Ed Harp's December LHS class '54 newsletter is chock full of great news about classmates. Appreciate his work!
To receive, notify Ed at: edharp@swbell.net

I know some are planning to head to warmer climate for the holidays. Meanwhile, been very cold here in the 'home-town', little warmer today as we wait for further winter expected on Monday.
Fixing to warm up the car and run those 'Santa' errands.......Georgia

Aunt Bill's Brown Candy ~ An Oklahoma Original!

The 'King' of Holiday Candies!

Aunt Bill's Brown Candy: Cooking Light columnist Molly Wizenberg shares her holiday baking ritual: the old-timey Aunt Bill's Brown Candy, a cross between praline and fudge from her homestate of Oklahoma. This soft, nutty, and somewhat crumbly southern delight is the ideal holiday treat. Makes 30 pieces.

Ingredients:

3 cups sugar, divided
1 cup half and half
1/4 cup water
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pound pecans, toasted, coarsely chopped (about 4 cups)

Preparation:

Butter 8x8x2-inch metal baking pan. Combine 2 cups sugar and half and half in heavy large saucepan. Stir occasionally over low heat until sugar dissolves. Set aside.
Bring remaining 1 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water to boil in heavy medium saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Increase heat; continue boiling without stirring until syrup turns deep amber, brushing sides of pan with wet brush and swirling pan, about 8 minutes.
Immediately pour caramel syrup into half and half mixture in large saucepan (mixture will bubble). Stir constantly over medium-low heat until caramel dissolves. Attach candy thermometer to side of pan. Increase heat to medium.

Continue cooking and stirring until mixture registers 244°F, about 12 minutes. Remove from heat and immediately stir in baking soda (mixture will foam slightly). Add butter and stir to melt. Let stand without stirring until mixture cools to 160°F, about 20 minutes.

Mix in vanilla.Using large wooden spoon, stir constantly until candy begins to thicken and loses its gloss, 4 to 5 minutes. (usually takes two people to beat). Mix in nuts (candy will be very stiff). Scrape candy into prepared pan. Using wet fingertips, press candy firmly into pan. Cool completely, then cut into 30 squares.

Talked with Doyce Grayson few days ago - my bud and one of my favorite people - he is re-cooping nicely after heart surgery, feeling good, and when I caught him he was sitting on the canal at the Gaylord Texan!
He and wife Diane met and were having dinner with '56 classmates Myrna Kay Langly, Kay Kimble, and Yvonne Anderson Coombs who were over nighting in DFW area before heading to NYCity to shop and see the sights!
They have a Donald Trump condo and plan to take the 'big apple' by storm!
Doyce says he asked them to toast a drink to him at Tavern on the Green!
So happy Doyce is doing well and he emailed me....
" I want to thank everyone that has had me in their prayers and thoughts these last couple of weeks while I have been experiencing these difficulties. I have been blessed with some of the best friends in the world and I'm not even prejudice. Again thanks, Doyce Grayson - Class of '56 and Honorary Member of the Class of '57."
Doyce is a sweetie! btw...Doyce told me he bought a new electric car!!!! After Christmas, hope we can plug that sucker in and take a spin!!!! Maybe can use electric rollers at same time? Or maybe just the ride will curl my hair!!

Had a visit with '59 classmate Wade Harrison at our local Greek Restaurant. Wade was doing great with his new knee and introduced me to his lovely daughter Laura who is here visiting!

Had a sweet note from Carolyn Sweeney - class '58 - she said her sister LaVelle (Sweeney) Boyd, who recently passed, was LHS class '49. Knew she was a grad but didn't know year.

A photo exhibit opening at the Museum of the Great Plains this week-end features a trio of local gal photogs including a LHS grad. 'Santa Fe Through the Lens of Friends' will exhibit photographs done by Fran Whener, Diane Mullins, and Janice (Parker) Drewry who is class '55. The exhibit will hang through Feb. 1.

I can't imagine (ha,ha) but several emailed that they were not familiar with Aunt Bill's Brown candy. If you would like the recipe (from Bon Appetit), I have it posted at another blog site I do: http://thruthegrapevine-grapevine.blogspot.com/

How 'bout them SOONERS!!!!!!! Go BIG RED!

OK, gonna go put on my Santa hat! 2-3 beautiful days here before next 'winter blast'.

Regards to all.......Georgia

I know our sympathies are with those who have lost loved family members and we have lost classmates and friends.

Jerry (Sasser) asked me to pass along that her husband - Ron Childs - will be having surgery on Dec. 18 for removal of prostate and lymph nodes. Recent tests indicate some cancer. She asks for your prayers on his behalf and those who will be treating him.

Class of '59......for those who are working on locating classmates....please send any info you have/find to Carlana (Fitch) Murray....and her email is <carlanaf@kempcenter.org>
We will be meeting again in late January - date tba.

Action is currently taking place with hopes that a 93 mile section of highway - which includes parts of Oklahoma 115, 58, 49, and 19 - will be approved and included for the National Scenic Byways Program. These highways go out through the Wichita Mtns., Medicine Park, and surrounding area. Sites along the 'way' would include historic cobblestone buildings in the Meers and Saddle Mountain area, historical artifacts of Quanah Parker, various museums dedicated to Native American and military history as well as the refuge itself. See pix below taken on 115 north of Meers. Note windmills at top. Beautiful area, hope it happens!

Recovering from 'ate-too-much' Thursday and black Friday!

Really don't like to hear that my good friend Doyce Grayson - class '56 - had a severe heart attack a few days ago. Good news is, with meds and those pesky 'life-style changes', hes gonna re-coop. Drove himself to hospital, some stints. Left hospital for home on Tuesday. Guess now he will just be making reunions '4 years, either way' instead of his customary five! Huh, Doyce! Hope so!!!!
Always enjoy seeing and visiting with Doyce!
Numerous from here and all over are keeping his phone line hot!
Doyce, wishing you all the best and a good recovery!

I know '59 classmate Wade Harrison had knee surgery recently also. Think he is doing well.

I tell you....all us with 'new' parts!!!! 'Parts is parts'!!!

Also, George York - class '51 - is a resident of the VA Center here in Lawton but has been in Memorial Hospital for several months now. I know he would appreciate hearing from friends and classmates. His brother is our classmate Ralph York.

Its about noon here in the home town and its a gorgeous Thanksgiving day. Bill is getting ready to grill 10 racks of lamb that have been marinading a couple of days in olive oil, lemon juice, fresh Rosemary. Then over the mountains and through the woods to brother George's house where there will also be turkey and 'roast beast'!
Actually, he lives in Sneed Acres but the other sounds so much more Thanks-give-iney!
The Good Lord has been most generous to us and I wish the same and more to each of you!
Happy Thanksgiving........Georgia

I hate to have to pass along more sad news and news of numerous classmates who are having health issues, but I know many of you do want to know so you can be supportive.

Elaine Smith, 98, Lawton, passed on Sunday Nov. 23. Miss Smith graduated from LHS in 1929 as Valedictorian of her class. She taught school for 41 years - 17 at Cameron and 24 in LPS. She taught English when 'we' were at LHS. She retired from Eisenhower in 1975. With her sister Bernice - who also taught - they traveled extensively around the world and the US.
She is survived by Bernice.
Services will be Tuesday Nov. 25 at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 2:00pm, with Dick Neptune - class '52 - officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery.
An online guest book is at: <www.beckerfuneral.com>

Received word of the passing of LaVelle (Swinney) Boyd, 77, of Nashville on Nov. 19. I am assuming LaVelle was a LHS grad but do not know year? LaVelle is daughter of LHS teacher Mrs. B.C. Swinney who taught English II. LaVelle is sister of Carolyn Swinney, class '58. She is also survived by two daughters.
Obit and info at: <http://www.legacy.com/Tennessean/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=120440056>

I know there are several classmates with serious health problems. I do not pass along such information unless I am asked to or told it is alright. One such is an email I received today from '59 classmate Patsy (Sheppard) Holcomb on her husband Larry.....
Georgia, I haven't written you before this because we were hoping for a better outcome for Larry. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer several weeks ago and has been in the hospital on 2 different occasions for a week or more at a time. There is a pancreatic cancer specialist at OU Med Center who originally thought that a Whipple surgery could be done and then combine that with chemo would help extend his life. However, last week, the drs. did a Pet Scan on Larry and found 2 cancerous nodules in his lungs. Today they are doing a biopsy on the lung nodules to find out if they has matastized from the pancreatic cancer or if it is a separate lung cancer. At this time, the only option given to us is chemo once they decide what kind of cancer is in his lung. So if you want to, please notify others and solicit prayers for Larry. I know there are a lot of 1959 grads who remember Larry and his brother Bill who was killed our Sr. year. Larry graduated in 1961. Will keep you posted as things progress. Patsy

Also, Fred Burch is recovering from lower back surgery, about 2 weeks ago. Slow, but doing ok.

Richard Hopper is having colon surgery after a past same type surgery for cancer.

Jerry Phelps is recovering nicely from recent knee replacement.

Mary Lee (House) Coleman was walking in WalMart today after recent knee replacement. Doing great!

Visited with Jerry Boucher a few days ago and he is having 2nd knee replace soon.

I know you will join me in keeping all these classmates in your thoughts and prayers. As Marcille (Burns) Covey commented...."if these are the 'golden' years, they are surely tarnished!"

On a lighter note.....Thanksgiving and Christmas are wonderful times to 'see' classmates home for a visit.

Oh, gotta say Happy Birthday to my brother George today! He was born on Thanksgiving Day & it hits every so many years. Not this year...but he's still a BIG turkey!!!! hahahhaha, kidding! Love to U bro and many happy returns! He's a '63 LHS grad!

Want to mention again, Ed Harp, class '54, has a great newsletter (once a month) with all kinds of info on '54 classmates. Anyone who is interested can receive his newsletter! Just email Ed at: and ask to be added to his list. We sometimes share info but Ed gets a lot of comments from '54-ers that I don't get or repeat! His recent November newsletter was most informative!

'59 classmate Dr. Jack Rhodes wrote to say that he & wife Glenda made a short trip to the 'home-town' recently and had opportunity to dine at Burgess Grill & Salas. (two of my favs) Jack went on to say that he thought Lawton was more "bustling" and looking good!!!! Jack is planning to be at our 50th next year. Look forward to seeing him and others!!!!

Have emails from several who were familiar with Aunt Bills Brown candy. One from Sue (Stamps) Johnson who said she still had an original copy of the recipe (5 pages) in handwriting of her friend Carolyn (Hennessee) Bass. Sadly Carolyn passed in 2005.
Sue was getting a copy of the mag to see if same and said she hadn't made it in years but might 'break-down' this year & do it!

And, my sister-in-law, Lugene, got a copy of Bon Appetit to look at 'history' and see if recipe was the same.

Let me just say...if any of you make this candy and need a 'quality control taste person'.....I'm your gal!

Class of 1959 will meet tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 17, Milo Gordon Honda, 7:00pm to work further on plans for 50th reunion next year! Would like to see any and all '59 grads who can attend. If you have been working on locating classmates, please being any info you have as we will begin to coordinate. This will be last meeting until after first of year! See you Monday!

Also passing, Dr. Byron Aycock, 92, of Lawton. Dr. Aycock was ear, nose throat doc to many of 'us' of the years. He was a LHS grad, class of 1933.
Doctor passed on Nov. 7 and a memorial service will be at 4:00pm Tuesday Nov. 11 (today), First United Methodist church here in Lawton. He was preceded in death by wife Doris but is survived by children Keith, Allan, Jane, & Andrea, and their spouses plus 11 grandchildren.
An on line guest book is available at: <www.grayfuneral.com>

Also passing, John Newton Redmon, 47, of OKC. John passed on Oct. 23.
He was a '79 grad of LHS and son of Manville and Deanna (Porter) Redmon. Deanna was LHS class '56. Sadly she died in 1999.

On a much lighter note.....Sue (Chalk) Briggs, class '64, traveled to LA recently where she had dinner with daughter Adrienne Briggs and Don Johnson (of Miami Vice fame) and attended a reception.
Adrienne is working on a project with Don.
btw....pick up the August 25-31 issue of Variety....the cover - front and back - is Adrienne's work and article page 27 features picture of Adrienne (a US film producer) and the project she is currently heading - "the Circle" - Middle East Int'l Film Festival. Break a leg!

In case you don't get it...pick up December issue of Bon Appetit. Page 95-96 has article - "Sweet Home Oklahoma". Gives some background and origin as well as recipe for Aunt Bills Brown Candy! IF you've never had Aunt Bills, you ain't lived! The yummiest of the yummy!

Gotta recall....the first time I ever had Aunt Bills was first Christmas Bill & I were married - 1965. Bills sister - Lugene (Williams) Mushrush, class '54, who is extraordinary cook - was living in Louisville, KY! Shortly before Christmas we received a box in mail with all kinds of great Christmas candies, white fruitcake, and Aunt Bills. It was all wonderful but the Aunt Bills was to die for!!!!

My mom had not been a candy maker so I appreciated Lugene for introducing me to such a delicious treat(s)! It's been down-hill ever since. The older copies of the recipe usually tell you it will take two people to 'beat the mixture'. It gets quite stiff and heavy. Lugene always made it by herself. Good luck, its worth it!

Hope all is going well for each of you.......Georgia

I am so very sorry and saddened to report the passing of Marie Margaret (Smith)Yarmuk, 87, of Lawton. Marie passed at a local hospital on Wednesday Oct. 8.
Marie is the mom of '59 classmate and my dear friend Babs (Yarmuk) Givens (Dee) and her sister Teresa (Yarmuk) Adair (John).
I have many fond memories of Marie and Louis as they were close friends of my folks when we kids were growing up! Took trips together, cooked out in the mountains (Mt Scott campground, Quanah Parker), played canasta, all those fun things most people don't do anymore.
Marie was a lovely person and I always thought she was so pretty. She was also a grad of LHS but I am not sure of the year.
Louis & Marie would have been married 70 years this Dec. 23. Babs' dad Louis is a resident at the VA Center here in Lawton. I hope you will join me in keeping Babs and Teresa and their families in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
Services for Marie will be at the First Christian church in Lawton, this Saturday morning, Oct. 11, at 9:30am. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
An on line guest book is at: <www.beckerfuneral.com>

LHS Homecoming is this week-end. LHS takes on Del City at Cameron Stadium Friday night and dance/party is Saturday night at Fairgrounds coliseum. I have two nieces that will be going to game and festivities!!!!
GO WOLVERINES!

Lawton class '59 met last week and continued discussion for 50th Reunion coming up next Oct. 2-3, 2009. We are still looking at possible locations and events. Nothing in concrete as yet. Decided to meet again on Monday Nov. 17 and would encourage any '59 grad(s) to come help with reunion planning.
Help spread the news as not all have a computer. We did 'assign' pages from yearbook to various persons to start with classmate locating. IF you have your '59 yearbook and would like to help with that, email & I can give you couple of pages that are still unassigned.
And, if you know where-a-bouts of a '59 grad.....let me know!

Weather is gorgeous! Regards to all.....Georgia

Great picture of the sixth grade at Howell School. Many went on to become our fellow '59 classmates and grads! See if you can identify any of them??** With thanks to Ed Adams for sharing the picture. Well, theres a clue....Ed is in there somewhere!

Heard from several including Wade Harrison and Frankie (Ingraham) Kinderman.....the Orpheum is NOT same as Ritz Theater as Ritz was located farther east, probably at 208 - 206 C Street! Guess Orpheum Theater was its own building and not there long? Maybe 'talkies' put it out of business?

LHS class of 1963 is having a two-day reunion.....Friday October 3, 6:30pm at Best Western in Lawton; Saturday Oct. 4, 6:30pm at Mikes Sport's Grill in Lawton. For details contact Janet (Burt) Terry at: (580) 529-3208 or (580) 678-1719.

And class 1959 - Meeting for 50th reunion planning - Monday Oct. 6. Milo-Gordon Honda, 7:00pm. YOU are needed.

**Howell School ~Left - right:Back row: Wallace Bradford, Ed Adams, Barbara Roberson; Jerry Bryant; Bill Taylor; Weldon Davis, teacher -Mrs Sexton.Third row: Evelyn Gilpin; Frankie Ledbetter, Patricia (Carahard?), Kay Roberson, Patsy June Henson, Rose Mitchell, Jody Allen, Emma Lake, (?). I recognized John Lansdon and Frankie Ledbetter! They changed very little from Howell to LHS. Sadly Frankie passed away several years ago. John is in Tejas!

There have been almost a dozen new persons ask to receive the news this past month. I just want to say welcome and hope you will enjoy the sporadic (as news happens). A reminder that past news, as well as pictures, are archived at
< http://www.thewolvernet.blogspot.com/> Again, welcome and hope you enjoy!

I am sorry that I overlooked the passing of one of our '59 classmates. Myrna LaDaune (Baughman) Ostrom, 67, of Marlow passed on Sept. 7 and services were in Marlow on Sept. 10. Myrna had been living in Marlow the past 35 years. She is survived by husband Donald E. Ostrom, a daughter Stacy Marine and a brother, Jimmy Baughman of Lawton.
There is currently an on line guest book at: <http://www.callawaysmithcobb.com/>

Had an email from '59 classmate Phil Wilder up Colorado way. Phil asked us to remember his son in prayers. His son Tim was due for 'retirement' from the Air Force very soon but when asked to return to Iraq, he re-enlisted for two more years! I know my prayers will be with Tim and with friends we have serving along with all the brave men and women we have fighting for us around the globe.

Phil also sent along this email from classmate Randy Parker who lives in Friendswood, TX, a suburb of Houston.Randy wrote ..
"We are ok. no power, but all safe. No damage to home. Lost some trees. All children ok too. Can't buy gas, little food or ice. Must stand in long lines to get. Thanks for checking. Randy & Gloria"

Big tree lost in yard at home of Johnna (Gordon) & Wayne Parks just south of Houston. They are back home in Lawton since July but still have home in Sugarland.

My Bill's sister, Lugene - class '54 - lives in high-rise condo in River Oaks area and had to evacuate because of power loss. Also nephew in same area with flooded basement, tree loss, power off. That area still without power and looks like at least another week. I know many had family members and friends in the storm area. Fortunately, I have not heard of any injuries.

There was some discussion some emails back about buildings, etc., that used to be downtown. One mentioned was the Orpheum Theater and the only ones who really could recall it were LHS grads of 30's - 40's.

I appreciate Yvonne (Anderson) Coombs, class '56, sending me the picture at bottom. (only in original email). It is an ad from the Lawton Constitution in 1920 and according to phone book the Orpheum was indeed a theater and located at 216 'C' Avenue. ('deep C' as it came to be called). Was this possibly what became the Ritz in later years?
Don't know actress Priscilla Dean .......but apparently a 'vixen'! Also, Yvonne says bottom of ad states "orchestra evenings" so assume these were silent films and there was a 'live' orchestra!

Recently we ran a picture asking 'guess who'...? Handsome guy, all dressed up in white tux and ready to go. Several actually guessed, others missed. Sam Joyner thought it was Buddy Holley and you know, it does look a lot like BH! But for all...it IS....'59 classmate Ed Adams!

The dates of October 2-3 , 2009 (next year) have been chosen for LHS Class 1959 - 50th Reunion! '59'ers, mark your calendar NOW and start making plans to be here for this very special occasion! Guests are also welcome!

Regards to all from the home town where the weather is GORGEOUS! Georgia

I know our sympathies are with these families who have lost loved ones.
Good story in the paper about Virginia (Johnson) Shaw-Scherler. Virginia who is a certified nurse anesthetist, received the 2008 Alice Magaw Outstanding Clinical Practitioner Award from the Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) during the groups meeting recently in Minneapolis. A most prestigious award. Major congrats to Virginia. Believe Virginia is LHS '54?

Class '59 update at bottom

From Tommy Hobbs:
LHS Classes of '49, '50, '51, '52, Saturday, September 13 at The Event, 1001 SW A in Lawton. Social hour 6:00pm.
Cost: $20.00 per person Deadline for reservations is Saturday, September 6, the date we must give the caterers the final count.
We will definitely not bar walk-ins from the reunion; however, walk-ins do create a problem......not enough chairs, not enough food, etc. Please cooperate by sending your reservation to Jo Riley, 224 NW Northwood, Lawton, OK 73505 if you plan to attend.

Several events are planned for Friday night, September 12.
A LHS/McArthur pre-game Tailgate Party for all ?49-?52 classes is scheduled for 6:00pm at the west side of Cameron Stadium. Attendees need to bring their own food and drinks. Classes will be recognized during the game.

A Class of 1949 Party will be held at 7:00 PM at Sarah and Kenneth Bridges? home (3304 Baltimore, Lawton). RSVP to Sarah Bridges by September 6.

The Class of 1952 will have a no-host dinner/class meeting at 6:00 PM at Geralds' Early Bird Cafe, 406 Lee.NOTE: this is a change of location. Was set for Ramada, but that restaurant is CLOSED.

btw...hate to report that Fred Leippe, class '52, had a serious fall at his home. Had gotten off the tail gate of a pick-up and when he stood up, he passed out. Unfortunately he broke his leg in two places, a bone just above his ankle and one just behind his calf. He is in a cast and wheel chair. So, remember Fred as he re-coops!

LHS class '73 is having a reunion on Sept. 13. I really have no details, would suggest you call Gay Gordon (married name) at (580) 248-6701.

CLASS 1959!!!! Ten (10) class of '59 grads met last Tuesday eve....8 gals and 2 guys! Appreciate those who were able to be there. Make a NOTE....next meeting will be Monday Sept. 15, 7:00pm, Milo Gordon Honda (same as last week). ALL invited, if couldn't make last time, come on this time! I know there are those who live away that would like to help. Perhaps some of you can help with jobs that will require computer skills, when time comes.

We discussed all kinds of things...dates, events, conflicts (little hard to do a year out), debated holidays for reunions as opposed to holidays for reunions! Some feel holidays good time, others feel bad! Ball games (schedules not available now), graduations, grand-kids, vacations, travel, etc. Decided no way we get organized by this next spring.
There will be no way to please all...but to almost a person who was at the meeting, to those who responded on-line, general consensus was to NOT hold reunion in Oklahoma hot weather. With all that in mind, the group picked September 25-26, 2009 or October 2-3, 2009 to hold our 50th class reunion.Want your input '59ers.
Those who attend will make decision on date at meeting on 15th and then go ahead with activities. Let 'us' know your thoughts on those dates and type activities.

Will possibly hold the Friday night event at Medicine Park, Saturday night event in Lawton. Possibly a Saturday morn breakfast. Group or individual trips? To tour Wichita Mtns, the new Wildlife Center, Meers, etc. Possibly the Old Central/LHS building will be finished and open, maybe a tour? Realize some individuals may hold events for classmates from their particular grade school. Always fun!

Now, keep in mind, Lawton is NOT replete with facilities for these type functions. People who attended last Tuesday are checking some of these things out & will report back on 15th. Some mentioned a golf tournament. IF, some of the guys and gals who play golf want to play, then we ask that some of them form a committee to put the tournament together. On that Saturday?

We are looking at publishing a 50th Memorial yearbook. We will need someone to take that project. Complile responses and be responsible for getting it printed. Have expertise from previous classes on this. Every classmate who wishes can send a page, two max with picture(s), telling what you have been doing since 1959! Well....maybe not everything!!! Looking at this 'project'Considering having a DVD made of the reunion? Also, making a DVD prior to reunion showcasing old pictures from classmates, grade schools, brownies, boy scouts, bluebirds, ball games, etc...to show during reunion. We will need people with computer ability to make it happen.
Also need someone who will take the sad task of putting together list of deceased and making display. And from all of you, we need help in locating missing classmates. I know Jerry Morgan will supply us with info of those 'found' and just exactly who we need to look for!!So....this is starting point.

You can thank Marilyn Smith, Susie Hyden Wilson, Carlana Fitch Murray, Barbara Walson Moeller, Sally Beth Wiseman, Johnna, Gwen Wood Phelps, moi, LaMartha Cook, and Larry Thompson!Input? Send it asap! And, you classes who have already celebrated your 50th....if you have any helpful hints, we would appreciate it! Send 'm on!

Regards......Georgia

ATTENTION LHS Class 1959.
Our 50th is just around the corner. With that in mind....'we' need to have a meeting. ANY and ALL '59 grads - gals and guys - are asked to meet next Tuesday evening, Sept. 2, 7:00pm, board room of Milo Gordon Honda, 5010 NW Cache Road in Lawton. (Appreciate Johnna furnishing the use of this great facility).
Please make plans to be there, we will plan as much for the reunion as we have people to implement it! Spread word with other '59 grads - not all have computers - give 'em a call, bring any info you may have about grads, yearbooks, stuff from last reunion, etc. Be thinking of time, place, activities, etc. Lets get it rolling...... C U Tuesday!

OK.....I am getting lots of interesting news with pictures!!!!! I am going to create a couple of new photo albums that will link from the WolverNet blog. One will be miscellaneous pictures of LHS grads (after being sent in LHS News) and one entitled Elvis, Elvis with classmates. In progress - Coming soon to the WolverNet blog.

Johnna (Adams) Hopper on behalf of the LHS graduating class of 1954 - Al Terrills class - the '54 class will be making a donation - from the class as a whole - to the Al Terrill Charitable Trust.

I had opportunity to meet and visit with '58'er Ron Sheffield at the recent reunion. He 'job' is so interesting and exciting, I asked him to send me a thumbnail. I appreciate Ron doing so and I want to share:......"a little about what I have done over the last 23+ years. I was an engineer during the build of the Hubble Space Telescope. My job was to modify the HST components (electronic boxes, mechanisms, scientific instruments, and appendages) so that they could be changed-out on-orbit. As a result of that task, I have trained all the Hubble astronauts to change-out the components for the HST Deployment Mission and 5 Servicing Missions. I trained them in the Neutral Buoyancy facilities at Marshall Space Flight Center and Johnson Space Center.By neutralizing the astronauts in their space suites in the facilities, we are able to get simulate as close as possible zero gravity. It has been a rewarding career. The astronauts have flown medallions and jewelry for me and my wife during the Hubble missions. Our next launch, most likely the last Hubble servicing mission, is presently scheduled to launch on 8 October 2008. Hopefully, this mission will enable the Hubble to be fully operational for at least 10 more years. Nova is doing a special on the Hubble after the mission and I have been interviewed twice so maybe you will see me in November when they air the special. After the mission, I will retire to our home on the Monterey, California Peninsula. Ron"

(see picture - at top - that was taken at Johnson Space Center in Houston Aug. 20, right after Ron was in Lawton).Ron with Astronaut John Grunsfeld, Rons' wife Linda and mother-in-law Berneice....Ron wrote...
" This is right before John goes into the water at Johnson Space Center Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in Houston to train for the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission EVA day 5."

I also had a nice visit with '58'er Lyntha (Nicklas) Wesner. She and husband Charles are very involved in a project to save rail transit in Oklahoma and the area. (they live in Norman). She asked if I would share that info and as I know several of you are really into trains (right, Ed?)....feel this will especially be of interest to many of you.
Check it out at: <http://www.ontracok.org/>

Had a nice email from Donna (Bridges) Waller.....not sure year Donna graduated (she is younger), but she is married to our '59 classmate Larry Waller. They have a 'summer' place in CO and she says they are thinking of 'retiring' but meanwhile, Larry is working on addition to the summer home. (see pic soon)

Work continues on the old Lawton High building. Photo (see pix soon) of removal of the chandelier from the auditorium.Artists with the Lawton - Ft. Sill Art Guild will work and oversee restoration of the fixture which will be placed back in auditorium. It took four men to handle the 5' diameter fixture which is mostly a heavy plaster material. Common material back in the day. If there are volunteers that would like to help with this project you can call Andy Owens at (580) 704-3437.
btw...yours truly was a founding member of the Lawton - Ft. Sill Art Guild...way back in 70's. Guess I should go help?

Look forward to seeing '59 classmates next Tuesday - IMPORTANT initial meeting!

Regards, Georgia
