......LHS News......

Originally sent April 21

Going to try different 'format' of the news. Will try listing the bad/sad news at end, that way any who would like can skip!!?? Had that suggestion but not sure whether to end with sad or happier? We'll try it!

From the eMail bag:

'59 classmate Jerry (Sasser) Childs is one of 'us' gals celebrating our XX bday this year. Jerry celebrated her day April 1 - no joke - in Niger Republic of Africa where she remains doing missionary work. Some 31+ years now. (pix above of Jerry and husband Ron Childs).

Ran into Richard (Dick) '52 and Carole Neptune at Bianco's....they were celebrating their 27th anniversary! Congrats guys!

Also had a nice visit with Damon Doye '52 and his wife Georgia (Hoskins) '54. They are lovely people and doing great. They used to have acres of wonderful asparagus. Love asparagus and they let my Bill & I go out & cut to our hearts content. Ends up not being the 'heart' but the 'back' that figures in the equation. Georgia said since all their kids grown and gone, no one to maintain patch, so no more!

And, visited with Shirley (Ray) Blowers, '53, (big sister of Larry) and her hubby Bob at Burgess's Grill! She was doing well, just in Lawton for short visit.

Hey! Things are a hoppin' in the home town - especially at the eateries!

LHS classmate Howard Council - saddle maker to the stars - received the Chester A. Reynolds Memorial Award last Saturday night at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Awards banquet and reception in Oklahoma City. The awards also celebrated their 50th Anniversary. The prestigious award is named for the museums founder and honors people who have helped perpetuate the ideals, history, and heritage of the American West.
A packed house of some 1,200 people attended including celebs Patrick Wayne (son of the late John Wayne); Stuart Whitman; Ed Harris; Rex Linn; Ernest Borgnine; Barry Corbin; Red Stegall; Michael Martin Murphey and many others!
What an honor for our LHS classmate Howard Council - class 1945.
(photo below taken at awards with Howard on left, Roy "The Super Looper" Cooper on right. Looper is greatest roper of all time, a long time friend of Howards, and presented the award to Howard along with Red Stegall).

I appreciate Ed Jones and others who sent information on the last (?) of the sale of Roy Rogers items from Roy's museum which closed some years ago in Bransom. Actually, my brother George Gill '63, was in San Antonio for the auction (April 10-12th) and brought me a 'program'. He said as per usual, items brought much more than estimated. George also attended the 'Roy' auction that was held in Denver last year.
btw....George bought a full body mounted coyote - although not from Roys' items! (photo above shows brother George and wife Chris clopping across the SA, TX country side in a buckboard!)

Class 1961 is planning their 50th reunion. Dates are September 2-3-4. Classmates can contact Sue (Otis) Wigington at: or call (580) 536-2344. The planners need names, address, contacts, etc. Also go to classmates.com for additional information.

Joint reunion of classes '49, '50, '51, '52 will celebrate on Friday and Saturday evening September 23 - 24. Saturday night will be at the Lawton Country Club ~ 'happy hour', dinner, etc. Also, probably Saturday morn, coffee/donuts at 'old' High School; golf? Friday night is set-aside for individual classes to have get together if want to....but someone from each class will have to make plans and arrangements. Volunteers/help is needed to update and keep class rosters current. Tommye Hobbs is retiring from that 'job'.

If you can help in any capacity or want more info, contact: Jo Riley (jomama632@sbcglobal (580)574-8150; Willie Martinez (graywarreagle@sbcglobal.net) (580)536-3367; or me Tommye Hobbs (tomehobs@gmail.com) (559) -718-6735. Let Tommye know if you are willing to help with the [individual] Friday night events or the roster/mailing.

A LHS class ring was found in California and trying to return to rightful owner. It is class 1978, has initials JFF. Was told could possibly belong to James Flory? If anyone has contact for James or knows who the ring might belong to, please contact Karen Beavers at LHS:

'59 classmate Ella (Price) Hunter suggested it might be fun some year to 'visit' the LHS Senior prom!!! Won't believe it, but I still have my prom dress! Yes! And, with a flounce, a gusset, and 2-3 yards material....it would still fit!??!!

Appreciate emails from Jack Atkins; Ken Gross; Bert Click; David Davis; Ed Jones; Ed Adams; Claudia (Looney) Davis; Norma (Abbott) Ray; Phil Wilder. Numerous have sent email address changes! Appreciate it ~ only way you can continue to receive the 'news'!!! I can't always pass along all the info I receive, but good to know classmates are out there!

'59 classmate Larry Joe Thompson says that a cousin and good friend of his - Daymon Sims - is having a "tough time" with liver cancer. Daymon graduated at Geronimo but ran around with a lot of Lawton kids. Daymon and his wife Maxine have been living in Carrollton, TX for many years. He is in good spirits but would be happy to hear from old friends. You can email Daymon at: daymon.sims@att.net

And, '59 classmate LaRue (Locke) Hogate continues radiation treatment for breast cancer. She is doing well but will have a surgery on May 4 for removal of tumor. She will also be moving this next week to Meridan, TX. Certainly wish her the best on all.

Always sorry to reports losses:

Also passing, William 'Doc' Parker, 76, of Lawton. Doc passed on April 12. He attended Central Jr. High and Lawton High School, but not sure he graduated? He is survived by his wife Theresa (Pittman); 2 sons and 2 daughters and families. Grave side services were held Saturday April 16.

I know our thoughts and prayers are with these having health problems and also with those who have lost loved ones.

Remember, previously sent news, reunion info, photos, more, archived at the blog. I am having trouble with the 'spacing' on the blog and from reading 'help' so are a lot of others. So....may have to tax your brain a little to read it!

Happy Easter ~ Happy Spring! Georgia
