Yours truly received an unexpected visit from 'Santa' on Christmas Day. No beard or red suit, but a gift none-the-less that I was excited to receive! Fellow '59 classmate Sam Joyner knocked on my door Christmas afternoon & presented me with a lovely, vintage, 8 x 10 glossy of the 'Big House' (name we came to call the house) where I and my siblings grew up - #1 Ft. Sill Blvd. He acquired it at the English auction recently. Sam was down from Tulsa to visit with friends and I so appreciate him taking the time to bring it to me. Love the picture, but good to visit with Sam too!

Opal (Wiley) Thurman sent some stories from her daughter who teaches in public school....wow!
Wish I could print them all but lengthy...suffice to say...not the way it was in 'our day'.

Snow....." It's really lovely :-) Neighbors have cleaned our driveway and walks for at least 2 weeks now, but we'll still be having a white Christmas as the white stuff is everywhere. Also, Happy New Year!"
Susan (Hankins) Ellington

Memories beget memories.....

"I remember the Old South or Cowen's Cafateria. My mother used to pick me up at lunch from Washington grade school, and take me to eat there. They had a nice large banquet room upstairs. Different organizations had meetings there. Virginia Zorger's [married name Wertz] Dance School often had students entertain for these organizations. I was in a dance group with Shirley Parker, Judy Guyll, and Pheobe Burnett. We were an acrobatic team. Judy Guyll was also a fantastic tap dancer."
Dorothy (Dawson) DeMoro

"Thank you so much for bringing old Lawton back to me, when I return I travel the old down district and think of the things that were. My family enjoyed the OLD South Cafeteria and really enjoyed another favorite, Wades Cafe on Second St. Mom and Dad would take is there on Sat. as a treat for cleaning the shop. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, from the Frozen North -10 degrees."
Bruce Knowles
btw......Bruce lives in Alaska

"My aunt worked at the cafeteria in the '50's as a cashier and lived next door in a little efficiency apartment. My dad and I would go to the cafeteria for dinner many nights when my mother worked late and couldn't prepare dinner. I loved the place."
Connie Pollner

..."You mentioned the English family in your last email. I went to grade school with Ellen and used to go to her house to play. We lived on Dearborn not far from where they lived. I guess this must have been when I went to Washington. I was always so impressed with that big white house and usually there was a maid there that would fix snacks for us. I remember one time we played school in her room or maybe it was just the playroom, but there were lots and lots of dolls all sitting out on the floor and they were the students. I'm sure Ellen would have graduated in 57 if she had stayed in Lawton. I never knew where she went to school when she left Lawton. Haven't thought about her in years. It's always good
to hear about people from your past."
Marilyn (Gordon) Smith

Doug Waddle Gerald, class '64, lives in Anchorage and recently had business reasons to be in DC. He wrote a great 'letter' about the experiences [fun part of the trip] he had and sites he visited. Wife was able to join him also. Seems he has business there every so often. His comments, sent to a third party, were very interesting and too long to use all here but will share this one....

...." one highlight of the trip, which I almost forgot to mention was that the first Friday I was there, singer Andrea Bocelli held a one night concert at the Verizon Center. The lead attorney bought a block of tickets to see his performance; between myself, the legal staff, and some of the experts, there were ten of us. Now I'm not an opera fan generally, but was completely awestruck by his talent."
Wow! Great trip indeed!

Also, emails from: (I know I'll miss someone).....Bill Gentry, Gordon Griswold, Luther Green, Peggy (Stockton), LaRue (Locke) Hogate, Wesley Best, Frankie (Ingraham) Kinderman, Nino Martinez (think he found pix of '55 class ring),
Gale McCray, Paul Gross, Ron Jones, Mitch Braley, Mike Wyant, Richard Densley, Ben Ansley, Lewis Chandler, Dan Glascock, Randy Moncrief.
Always enjoy hearing from classmates!

Dee (Vanderpool) Glass, '52, will be resuming chemo treatments next week for ovarian and bladder cancer. I visited with Dee just before Christmas and she was upbeat and hanging in there.

This little 'elf' has been mighty busy as I'm sure most have... some comments concerning recently
sent items and few new ones.

Dee (Vanderpool) Glass, 52, recalls that she and Nancy English met at a dance at Ft. Sill and enjoyed a short friendship before Nancy went east to school.

Frankie (Kurtz) Browning needs a [good] picture of a 1955 LHS class ring. If you can help Frankie out, please contact her at:

More little known 'news' about LHS classmates.....these two tidbits from Lewis Chandler....

#1. "Jimmy Hannigan and I slipped over the English fence one summer night and took a quiet swim. Probably around midnight. Someone else was with us, but it escapes me now."

#2. "Tommy [Nyrop] and I were going down Gore to the Catholic Church for a boy scout meeting one evening and Tommy demonstrated how far he could spit. He had a way of folding his tongue and then blew as hard as he could. I'd say a good 15 feet. He was pretty good."

NOTE: I spoke with Tom who didn't want to call attention to his talent! But did verify that he could indeed SPIT a long distance and had won several 'spitting' events back in the day!

Funny, all these 'stories and exploits' finally being told here in later years as we reach 'maturity'! True? You decide!

"Your mention of the Old South Cafeteria brought back memories of my childhood. My father had us in church every Sunday at First Methodist when it was just each of the Lawton/Central Junior and Senior High. So it was a big treat to get out of church and race down to the cafeteria. I remember the lines were clear out the front door and long. We developed a resolve that we had to beat the Baptists to get a spot in line.
I remember the old wooden chairs on the tiled floor. I remember my dad having to order for me. I used to love their blueberry pie. Gee what memories."
Bob Looney

"My mother worked at the Old South Cafeteria between '47-'52. As a latch key kid, I remember having some good, hearty meals on my mom's ticket. Sam, any chance of seeing pictures of it?"
Gene Morris

NOTE: Appreciate Sam Joyner for sharing his picture of the Old South!

Bruce Knowles wrote that temp around Thanksgiving - at his home in Alaska - was 17! Brrrrrr.....Hard to thaw a turkey!!!!

Major congrats to Jackie Yoast and his wife Priscilla Marie (Robertson) who recently celebrated their Golden 50th!

The news item on the English family brought numerous emails......I learned that Nancy (English) King passed in 2011. She attended Washington Elementary school & later went east to private school, but had she remained she would have been LHS class 1952.

This nice note from Dunnie "Moad" Anthony, class1960......

"I read with much interest your article regarding Nancy King. I volunteer for the Assistance League of Tulsa, and was orientation co-chair for 2 years. The Rev. Nancy English King was in the 2011 orientation class as a new member. When we found out that we were both from Lawton, we had much to talk about. Nancy was a very gracious and special lady...I enjoyed her company, and am sorry that I did not meet her sooner."

This from Jan (Rice) Grogan......

"She and I doubled dated a lot after she returned from Bryn Mawr. I lost touch with her around 1970. She was a kind and intelligent woman. I am not surprised that she became an Episcopal deacon."

And it seems the English swimming pool was place of interest in 'our' formative years....

" Nancy English was in my class at Washington Elementary so she would have been an LHS grad in 1952. At Washington we had a swimming party every year at Exall's house!"
Dick Neptune, '52

"We were best friends growing up and would see each other during the summers , since she went away to a private school. We had so much fun....her parents had a swimming pool so that was a real treat for me to be invited to her home."
Sameera (Hamra) Murad, '52

"......reading about Exall English, reminded me about the time Bob Ledford, Bill Baird and myself climbed that brick fence, and went skinny dipping in their pool one dark nite, summer of '56."
Luther (Lou) Green

Mercy! I know same thing happened at the Shepler pool also...it was right across the street! I have names! Nope can't tell that story yet! Girls still hiding out! ahahhahahhahahha
Not to mention a (girls) skinny dip at Ft. Sill pool I've got to write a book!

On a personal note, we had an upstairs bath that faced Ft Sill blvd & we could get up there & see across the street to the swimming pool area of the English house. We only took peeks when parties were going on! haha!
I guess I can tell this now, my brother George - who most remember as quite incorrigible - raided the party sites a time or two after the fact & brought home 'bottles' for his 'collection'. They were empty! Or they were when he got home???!!!

Sam Joyner - lives in Tulsa - also attended the English auction and scooped up some great Lawton mementos: early pictures of Doe Doe Park, Old South Cafeteria, Easter pageant, first frame bldg in Lawton, the flood of 1904, couple other yearbooks. Also, a 'neat' letter that I will share soon.

Again, Herb Jacobs revisits the Lawton sports scene in days gone by. His Sunday column - 'Where Are They Now' - of November 27 - page 6-C, looks at years 1960 and 1961.

Barb Odom Smith, '56, says her brother - David Shell - is also a 'turkey' this year, being born on November 24. David is LHS class 1969 & he and wife Susan live in Tijeras, NM, just outside Albuquerque. He returns 'home' on occasion to hike out in the Wichitas.

My sister Suzy Salas, '64, is just back from Vegas! Don't know what she/they did? What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!!!!!

'59 classmate Wade Harrison has left the 'home town' to return to the sunny state of Arizona! He will be doing some back and forth but one of Wades daughters is the area (Scottsdale) and he has lived there previously! All the best Wade!

Also in AZ for Thanksgiving, classmate Larry Campbell. He is in Phoenix with son Chris who works for PING!

Have to share this....I was so excited when Lewis Chandler emailed to let me know he had purchased a 1914 LORE at an auction in Tulsa. The auction was done for the estate of Nancy (English) King, formerly of Lawton, and daughter of Exall English, founder of Security Bank. I am sure the LORE belonged to Exall or possibly his wife, Lucille. I was even more excited when Lewis sent the LORE to me for safe keeping and posterity! I have read some and do recognize a few names of those who became business people in Lawton. Just a great 'book' and in very good condition, just small water damage on bottom. I will take great care to preserve it!

NOTE: The English family lived across the street from us when I was growing up. They had two daughters - Nancy and Ellen. ( and a Cocker named Fudgie). Both girls went to school in Lawton until Jr High, freshman or maybe sophomore year and then they went away to private school. Nancy obviously has passed but I do not know when? I have not heard anything about Ellen (English) Chadwell in years. I know some of you will remember them and had they remained in Lawton school would have been classes of about '55, '56, '57?

Mike Wyant, '57, let me know that the fall edition of The Prairie Lore ( published by the Southwest Oklahoma Historical Society) contains two stories and a poem written by Mike that describes growing up in Lawton in the 1940's and 50's. Mike says he feels 'honored' to be in the same edition as several other interesting stories including one about Erle Haliburton, (The Haliburton Company of Duncan), and the great Comanche Chief, Quanah Parker.

For those interested, the semi-annual publication can only be obtained from the Southwest Oklahoma Historical Society, P.O. Box 3693, Lawton, OK 73502, for an annual fee of $12.00.
Mike says he will have more stories and articles in the future but will only "use some of your names in the good stories"! Well.........maybe better check this out!!!!

btw....Mike was in a car wreck couple months ago but luckily escaped with minor cuts and bruises.

Are YOU a former Camp Fire Girl? If so, Connie (Conway) is trying to find out IF any of you gals would be interested in a WO HE LO Camp Fire Girl reunion? Maybe next spring? April - 2012? She has started gathering names, addresses, etc., and would like to hear from any who would like to have this type reunion. The Camp Fire Girl office here in Lawton closed in 1990's and there are NO records. Locating former Camp Fire Girls will have to be done word of mouth, contacting those you may know. You can email Connie at: or call her at: (580) 574-6601. She works but does have an answer machine and will return all calls. So..... get hold of Connie and let her know.

Jerry Boucher sent an update on wife Mary Ann. News was some 'better' than they thought, but she was diagnosed at MD Anderson with a blood disorder called Myleofibrosis. She is joining a trial program dealing with this illness and it will necessitate their traveling back & forth to Houston for a while. They ask for your prayers.

Have just received info that Wilma Jean (Ervin)Young passed November 5 in Colorado and services were held November 11. She was LHS class 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband Dean Young, class 1950; she is survived by a daughter, DeAnn; a son Steve; several grandchildren; a brother Covert Lee Ervin [would have been '59] who is married to our '59 classmate Gloria (Lamb).

Had opportunity to watch the DVD, "Memories of Old Lawton High". It is being shown on the local educational channel. Very well done & enjoyable. [So far] Has interviews with former LHS grads, Dr. Charles Graybill and his wife Betty, Wayne & Mary Jo Smith, Ken Bridges, Bob Hillis, Peggy (Elledge) Long, Minnette (Zak) Page. Good stories of the 'old' days and some quite humorous.

You can order a copy of the DVD by contacting: mbaker@lawtonps.org
They are $12. each IF you pick them up. If ordering to be mailed, add $5. - total $17.
They are continuing work on the interviews and at some point, you will be able to watch in the 'Memory Room' at the Old High School.

Also, a Christmas ornament is being sold by the Lawton Heritage Association and is now available at the Museum and Massads Gifts. It features a 'picture' of the Old High School. (see photo). Lovely and is nicely 'packaged'. It is metal and around 'border' that says Lawton High School, it is 'gold tone' while the school itself is 'silver tone'. Like they say on eBay - "much prettier in person".! And is IS!
Also includes a card with photograph of the school & brief history. It is the Second Edition - last year was First - and featured the old Mattie Beal Home. A few of those remain available. Very nicely done, good remembering of Lawton/school history and if Santa ain't leavin a diamond bauble in yer stocking.....this would make a good stuffer for that fav LHS grad!!!!

In 2009, Matthew Spradlin, son of '55 grad Bobby Spradlin and wife Stona, co-wrote a graphic novel called "Bad Kids Go to Hell". There are a total of four issues which turned out to be the best selling graphic novel of 2009.
Matthew is now in post production of a movie by the same name, which he is directing . It was filmed at Spiderwood Studios in Utley, Tx outside of Austin and various locations around Dallas. You can google that title and see a trailer.***
It stars among others: Cameron Deane Stuart of the " iCarley " TV series: Ben Browder of the " Stargate SG-1" TV; Judd Nelson from " The Breakfast Club" and "St. Elmo's Fire"; also Ali Faulkner and Marc Donato.
***Try:
Depending on the distributors schedule, they hope for release sometime in 2012.

btw.... Bobby is taking ME to the Academy Awards, so don't ask!

LHS grads Wayne Cox, '51, and Clinton Herring, have just been inducted into the Texhoma Racers Hall of Fame along with a friend and another driver for Clinton, Joe Farley. Clinton raced (actually drove the cars) for a few years and then turned the driving task over to Wayne Cox and eventually Farley joined them. Herring stayed active as car 'owner' and worked in the pit crew. He says he is still out at the Lawton Speedway every week-end (during racing season) with his son Greg. They are currently running an "open wheel car". Good read in Sunday Constitution, November 13, page 8-C.
Always heard those guys were 'fast' but I didn't know they were talking about cars! ahahha Congrats guys!
Photo from Lawton paper: Wayne on left - Clinton right.

In same paper, page 5-C, Herb Jacobs continues with headline stories from Lawton sports in 1958 and 1959. So many names you will recognize....Larry Waller, Larry
Ray, Stuart Tonemah (deceased), Babs Yarmuk, Ted Owens, Richard Killian, Julie Ashlock.

The #1 TOP story of 1959
- "The LHS baseball team made history by earning the schools first State Championship." Goes on to say...."The Wolverines landed six players on the 12 man all conference team - pitchers - Jerry Boucher, David Hillis; shortstop Oscar Pickering (deceased); 2nd base Billy Dayton (deceased); catcher Ray Tillman; outfielder
Gale McCray."
MY year, MY classmates - way to hustle guys! (little sports lingo there).

Help me sing Happy Birthday to a BIG turkey...hhahahhahaha. My bother George Gill was born on Thanksgiving Day and every few years it lands on T-Day again. This is the year (24th). Also Dee (Vanderpool) Glass shares her special day with my brother! Sorry, Dee.!!!!
Kidding, love them both. Happy Birthday guys!

'59 classmate Jerry Boucher let me know that his wife Mary Ann (Martin), '61, has been diagnosed with a blood disorder and has gone to MD Anderson in Houston for tests. This was on the 11th. I have not had an update.

Breaking News (literally)..... Lawton, America got a really good 'jolt' last Saturday night as the strongest earthquake ever experienced in Oklahoma, said 'hi'! Upgraded from a 5.2 to a 5.6-7, and from what I am being told, rather a 'shallow' quake at some 3 miles down.
A quake earlier in the day registered some 3.+ and we didn't feel it. But this one at 10:53pm - also centered around Sparks, OK in Lincoln County - rumbled on southward to Lawton.
Understand it was felt as far north & east as Wisconsin! I was sitting at my computer & thought Bill was behind me trying to shake me out of the chair, I turned, no Bill. That's when I saw the rest of room 'moving'. Does startle one! Lasted about 5-6-7 seconds. Cell phone circuits immediately busy, did get some land lines to family. Spoke with friends on Sunday who live (as crow flies) just about 8 blocks north of us...they said, knocked things off cabinet and stuff out of bookshelves. As far as I know, no serious damage in our area & no one hurt. Was some structural damage of significance around Shawnee. A 'not common occurrence' for us - good conversation item!

What was so bizarre, had just opened an email from Murdoch Matthew with link to earlier quakes in area. And just then, viola!~

Classmate Charley Crabtree at Norman sent this text to Murdoch literally as we were emailing...

"Yep, we had one last [in] October. We just now had another one. It was 5.2. It really shook. My daughter in the SF Bay Area had a house party for her 45th birthday, and they felt a 3.5 in the early morning. The site near Oakland has been active for a week, little 2.0s and 3.+s almost daily. Bad enough the land goes up and down (you develop strong calves walking in SF), it won't stay still!"

And friends were sending emails fast & furious from and back to Oklahoma.....
Charles Darling in CA is a 'veteran' of quakes, wrote...."Sounds like you are experiencing a "swarm" of earthquakes. Sometimes they come in clusters and that fits with your description.
Probably going to experience some aftershock activity...usually not as bad as the original quake."

NOTE: Were numerous after shocks closer to the epicenter! Pretty good one - 4. - in Meeker.

Larry Joe Thompson was in local movie theater and people were startled trying to figure "what was that?"

Murdoch also added this note: "In my day, cracks in the ceiling plaster were all from artillery fire at Ft. Sill. Then there was the time that shrapnel from a mis-aimed shell hit Mike Banks's house in a NW Lawton suburb and a piece struck his wife's hip as she rested on a sofa. (Mike must have been class of 47 or so -- he was the first-chair-first trumpet player in the boys' band while I was a member, 1946-1947. Leonard Roe was second-chair-first. I was third-chair-third.) Have fun. What next?"

btw....next time I want a 'ride', will open an email from Murdoch! They make my computer chair rock 'n roll!

And on Monday, storms came in, we did get some good rain but tornados all over the area. Great film of a tornado dancing across the Wichitas - shown on News 9 in OKC. The pestilence continues!

********************
Sorry, made a goof in last news. Had Gale McCray living in Dallas area, when in fact, he lives in Ft. Worth area. So.....re-program that GPS.

Pat (Burris) Dean, '56, wrote that she and hubby Paul went to the playoff games in St Louis. Then some of their boys - they have 5 sons - and Pat went to the World Series games. Pat said it was her second World Series, but game six was "best of all games". She added...."Fun, but very tired. I may be getting old!" Naw!
Pat is married to Paul Dean, Jr., son of major league pitcher Paul Dean and nephew of the great Dizzy Dean.
Back in the day, Pat & Paul hadn't been married long & we all lived in same apartment building for a while. Lot of fun and longtime good friends.

Good news from Tommye (Boudreaux) Hobbs, '52, that hubby Ray's last test/scan showed NO cancer! They have also moved out of the motor home, out of Maderia, and into Granite Bay, CA where they have a lovely 'suite' at their daughter and son-in-laws until a "grannie cottage" can be built on adjacent property. Tommye says..."Granite Bay is on the map, but it is a "bedroom community" between Roseville and Folsom, just east of Sacramento. Summers should be a tad cooler here and I am hoping that we are slightly above the notorious valley fog line."

Sing 'Happy Birthday' to Judy K. (Matthews) Johnson on 11-11-11.!!!

Someone planning to visit Lawton inquired and received info from Ed Harp and Jim Reynolds that LHS alums still meet every Tuesday morning at 9:00 in the cafeteria at Memorial Hospital for coffee/breakfast and a visit. All grads welcome and if need any additional info, call Charlie Fatum as I was told he is there every Tuesday!
This is 'group' that used to meet at the Wildcat Cafe inside Ramons Flowers. Sadly, the Wildcat is gone!

'59 classmate Ed Adams writes that the Fall colors in LeFlore county are really beginning to show. The drive along the Talimena Trail and Hwy 270 in South Leflore are very colorful. He invites everyone over. Ed says.... Poteau - Heavener - Hodgen to the Talimena drive then west to Talihina.

Wedding bells and congratulations for LHS grad(s) and the current Mayor of Lawton, Fred Fitch, '65, and Natalie Higgins, '76. They tied the knot on October 21 at the Palmer House in the 'windy city' - Chicago!

Tommye Hobbs, '52, had an automated response telling all that she & Ray, '52, are now 'homeless' and staying in their RV at the Madera (CA) Fairgrounds with no Internet connection. Ray has several more weeks of doctors appointments before they can complete their move to the Sacramento area. She gives a phone number if anyone needs it, email me.

Murdoch Matthew, '49, and I have emailed several times back & forth & I recalled the TV show Murdoch used to host - Kid's Corner - over KSWO TV here in Lawton. I told him I wrote to him one time & he sent me a piece of his original 'art-work'. A hand drawn picture of a duck! I was in grade school at the time & I kept it for years but do not know what happened to it. To make a longer story short, Murdoch was just so kind to mail me several 'posters' he did for a puppet theater in Bloomington, IN back in the '70's & '80's. Just great and so reminiscent of the art work I received & remembered from many years ago. Since I am a BIG Halloween collector, I especially like one called the 'Witchy Broom'...spider & all!!!!

'60's classmate Gale McCray played baseball at LHS - played left field, played on 1959 State Champion Team. Gale, who lives in Dallas area, sent info on an interesting event coming up soon....the Tarrant County College, NW Campus, Senior Education Program presents 'Celebrate America with Baseball and Apple Pie', on Friday November 18, 11:30am - 2:00pm.
There will be nachos, Texas BBQ, and of course apple pie! Gale will be part of the entertainment - 'Gale McCray: One Man Looks at Baseball'. Gale says his part will be some poems, some songs, and memories of when he first started playing baseball in 1949 on McKinley street (in Lawton, America) with Tommy and Johnny Bateman and others. It sounds fun and if you are in the area and want to attend, you can get more information by contacting: Kathy Saburn, (817) 515-7199.

Once again, Herb Jacobs in his Sunday sports column talks about the '50's at LHS, Cameron, and Lawton muni. Reviving Top 10 lists from Lew Johnsons columns of 1956 and 1957, excerpts from column of December 10, 1956 feature names: Barbara Waid, Don McFarland, Harvey Coombs.
The #1 story of that column/list...."LHS football team won 10 of its 11 games, shared the Boomer Conference title with El Reno and was named states top prep team in all the polls."

The Top 10 list of 1957 has names: Jerry Moon, Ron Hartline, Bob Yingling, Brent Morford.
And the #1 story of that column/list was,
"Hartline stole the show by capturing out-standing player trophies in three all-star games during a 15 day span in August."

Also, "[Billy] Higgins was boys winner and [Babs] Yarmuk captured the title in Boomer Conference tennis championships. Higgins also won the state Junior Jaycee title & earned a trip to Santa Monica, CA."

"Sid Ahlschlager of LHS was named to the All-State baseball team, giving the Wolverines a representative on that elite squad for the sixth straight year".
If you can get the article - a good one, page 5-C, October 30, Sunday Constitution.

Been difficult, but, I have managed to not eat all the Halloween treats, so will be tending the door tonight for the little intruders! Weather has slight 'crispness', clear, so should be a beautiful fall evening!
I love Halloween and always remember the fun and excitement of the school carnival at Washington - especially the Spook House - and then trick r treating all the way home!
Happiness IS finding 5 Milk Duds in one of those little individual boxes, when it's usually just 4. See....doesn't take much to keep 'getting older' people happy!

Halloween trivia.....on October 31 in....

1898 - candy corn is produced by the Goelitz Confectionery Co of Fairfield,CA. Now known as the Jelly Belly Candy Co. [does anybody really like candy corn?]

1926 - Master Magician Harry Houdini dies on October 31 from a burst appendix.

1946 - Pres. Harry Truman reports a mysterious knocking on his bedroom door and in a letter to his wife, declares the White House to be haunted! [I'll say!]

1966 - Charlie Brown first utters, "I got a rock", when trick r treating in the TV special, 'It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown".

2000 - Trunk-or-treating: kids receive candy from the trucks of cars gathered at a school or church parking lot...it begins to catch on as advocates tout safety. [bummer]

2010 - Belleville, IL: bans trick r treating for kids over the age of 12.

Do you know........the LHS Lore is 100!!!! And for the 100th edition of The Lore, the 25 member staff is working hard to produce an especially memorable edition of the yearbook. The 100th Lore is set to contain a mixture of pictures of the current school year and the best old photos culled from the last century of yearbooks. Including 'Huey' - the LHS Wolverine mascot - in all his forms. (did U know his name was Huey? - I didn't!).
You can pre-order the 100th edition of The Lore by calling the LHS office - (580) 355-5170; cost is $75.00 each.
btw...great story on LORE - page 5-A, Sunday Constitution, October 23.

Another great story from Herb Jacobs in same paper, page 6-C, talks about the 'Top 10' sports stories for 1954 & 1955. The story from 1954 was originally run in a column written by Lew Johnson. Will be lots of names you will recognize. Herb says....more to come, up through year 1963. Try

"Allen Isbell mentioned that he first experienced pizza at Bianco's. I too ate my first pizza in Lawton. I don't remember where. But I do remember the last time I saw Allen eating pizza. It was at Abilene Christian. We lived in the same dorm and early one morning he was standing still in his underwear in my room eating pizza left over from the night before for his breakfast! Allen likes pizza."
Clifton Ditmore, '53

Note: I gotta tell ya....back in the day...there was nothing better than Bianco's or Dantes' leftover pizza for breakfast! Think most of us have been there!!! Allen was ahead of his time. haha!

Yours truly was out of town and unable to attend either of the [old] LHS events. But, I did receive this nice note on the dedication from '59 classmate Carlana (Fitch) Murray who attended the Tuesday event:

"..... the opening of the new city hall building on Tuesday was very nice. Very nostalgic to sit in the 2nd row and reminisce about past assemblies, the school in general, etc. Many dignitaries there but the highlight (at least for me) was when Kenny Bridges and Peggy (Elledge) Long each spoke about the school and some of its former teachers........ Vanita Lee, Paul Wilson, Lena Japp, Lily Stafford, Marvin Bickett, Glenn Dosser, and others.
Also, a brass ensemble played prior to the actual ceremony, first time the stage had been used since the school closed. They closed their part of the program with a rousing rendition of "We're Loyal to you Lawton High!" All in all, a very nice way to end an afternoon!"
Carlana
(color pix of event from newspaper - Carlana is in purple in second row, her mom - Mrs. Fitch - is on her left).
(also, black and white photo shows the restored 'stage').

My Bill & I journeyed to Texas - Big D - on OU/Texas week-end. Not for the game per se, but to see 'West Side Story' with tickets given to us as a gift from our daughter Leslie. The show Saturday night at the State Fair Music Hall was a wonderful production, with a cast of young people with agile limbs to make all the great dance moves as well as wonderful voices to sing! Really enjoyed it.
Meanwhile, we had opportunity to attended a pre-game party on Friday night at former Lawtonians Bob & Karen Drewrys lovely Dallas home. Bob & Karen were our next door neighbors prior to moving to Dallas. Numerous former Lawtonians there - Dr. Sam Hamra, Don Gaskins, Ron Jones, and others down from Lawton and surrounding Oklahoma areas. Great visit, delicious food, and Bob & Karen were sensitive hosts taking into consideration that not all their guests were OU fans [can't imagine]. They had plenty napkins/cups, etc., with OU, but also some orange 'hook 'em' horns' in use as well. Didn't do Texas any good! Lovely evening and always great to visit with long time and dear friends.

On Saturday, Bill joined Ron Jones and several other of the 'guys' to watch the OU game and lunch at Sam & Sonia Hamras' beautiful Dallas home. I did what any self-respecting female would do in Dallas ....I went shopping! Great time had by all.

Ron Jones was a wonderful host to us personally, having ask Ron about places to stay due to large influx of people, he went above and beyond, was extremely helpful and got us fixed up! Herb Jacobs was right...Ron knows Dallas!

Combo class reunion

Tommye (Boudreaux) Hobbs sent this great re-cap of the recent combo (classes '49~'52) reunion and thought many of you would enjoy....if you haven't already received it. I know a lot of pictures were taken and hope to have some posted on the blog....soon! gjw

Hi Classmates,
In my humble opinion, the reunion was GREAT! Many of the regulars were back, some regulars were missed this year because of health problems, and several people we haven't seen in years were back. We had 110 at the dinner, 30 plus at the Meet & Greet Session Saturday morning, and 15 or so at the Sunday breakfast. Surprisingly, at Annie's on Monday, ten showed up...the place to be on Monday night, I guess.

We reserved Friday night for individual classes to meet in small groups. 1950 and 1951 had nothing scheduled; 1950 met at the Bridges and 1952 met at the Golden Corral. About 20 were at the 1952 dinner; I have no idea how many were at the Bridges, but from what I hear it might have been the best part of the reunion for the 49'ers. These small groups give us a chance to sit down and really visit with one another.

Our old high school building is still being refurbished. It looks as if the auditorium will be completed soon; it is truly beautiful. However, no matter what the city does to our school, the echoes of locker doors slamming, students yelling to each other, teachers lecturing still echo through the halls. Are we haunting the place? I for one love going back there and am most eager for the kiosk with our stories to be set up.

The "new" Lawton Country Club was a wonderful place for the all-class dinner. The food was excellent; however, they ran out before all had been served. Several had to wait before additional food was brought out. Also, they forgot to put out our salads! Jo is addressing the problem head on. In talking with people from other groups who have had events there, the food problem was not unique to our group. The Country is a beautiful facility, but they absolutely need to improve their food service.

First time in years we have had a working PA system, but the crowd was so noisy, the speaker still couldn't be heard. We were able to mention those that had traveled the farthest: Bert Click, 1700 miles from Chico, CA and Lawrence Fanning, 800 miles from Owens Crossroads, AL. Of course, Ray and I, 1500 miles from Madera, CA. Ray Roper, the emcee, didn't try to compete with the crowd to present other Wolverwards.
Trying to be a matchmaker, he had all the single women stand, then asked the single men to stand. Quite a few women stood, but Tommy Sheets was the only man with courage to stand. Missed your chance, guys.

The Sunday morning breakfast was another chance for small group visits. It was fun! Lots of laughing, lots of story telling. Fred Burch again told of his former drug problem. If you weren't there Friday night or Sunday morning, you will have to ask him about it. He will be happy to share his experience.

Saturday night Jo and I were recognized for our six years of handling the yearly reunion dinners. Because of spouses' health reasons and because we are just plain tired, this our last year. No one has volunteered to take over. Too bad. Is this the end?

Once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine. Best wishes and good health to you all,
Tommye (Boudreaux) Hobbs, '52

Tommye & Jo have done a fantastic job all these years and Tommyes' assessment of the reunion being 'great' was most accurate! It is hoped someone will step forward to keep this event alive and going. Some have already mentioned 'plans' to be in attendance next year for the 60th reunion (for some).

Regards to all from the home-town...where 'we got it goin on'! Georgia

Dedication

Classmates: I have info on several items/events, sent by other classmates, and I have decided to just send out as I received it. So....look forward to it and back to 'original' format soon. gjw
Appreciate this from Peggy (Elledge) Long:

Dear Friends and LHS Graduates:
Phase One through Four of renovation of our [old] LHS into the new Lawton City Hall is finally completed……and it looks wonderful. The City of Lawton will be having an Open House to introduce it to the community and other interested people from 1:00-5:00pm on Friday, October 7.

They will then have a Building Dedication Ceremony at 5:00-6:00pm on Tuesday, October 11 before the first City Council meeting in the LHS Auditorium. James Brock, Class of 1948, will be Master of Ceremonies for the occasion. The auditorium has been restored as much as possible to its original décor as we remember it from our days there. The chairs are red velvet and in the style of the originals. You are all invited to attend either of the events.

Would also like to let you know that the first phase of the Oral History Project for LHS is nearing completion. I have interviewed 62 graduates from 1930 to the late 1940’s. Thirty of those have been edited and will be available for viewing on the interactive kiosk in the Archive Room which holds memorabilia from our days there. We have also decorated five lockers outside the room with mementos representing early LHS. I hope you will drop in sometime and see some of the interviews which are full of really old memories.

If you would like to be interviewed as we begin the second phase with an emphasis on the classes of 1950-1954, please give me a call at 580/248-4680 or 580/695-6625. I particularly want to know when out-of-towners are coming this way. Unfortunately, we can only video on week days as Jim Whitely, the camera man, works at the Museum of the Great Plains and is only available during the week.

Auditorium chairs are still available to be bought for $500. A plaque with your name or your family name will be affixed to the back of the chair and you can designate the copy. Also available are packets of 20 note cards with a wonderful engraving of the school on the front for $10. If you live out of town, please include $2. for postage. They are great for thank you notes or other personal messages.
Peggy (Elledge) Long, Class of 1954

*****************************

It was also mentioned, the Class of 1954 is taking up donations to buy one of the auditorium chairs, which would be special since theirs was the last Senior class to graduate from that building. Please send your donation to '54 classmate Janette Hanes at 12314 West Westgate Drive, Sun City West, AZ 85375 or call her at 602/881-1823 or e-mail her at JHANES@STELLAR.NET

Perhaps classes that graduated from the old building might also want to consider buying a chair?

I was told the dedication on October 11 was the more important of the two events, in case you can't do both.

Regards to all and hoping to see many of you at these events. This is the building many of us only knew as our [Central] Junior High. Georgia

'Our' old stomping grounds goes NATIONAL - WAYNE'S makes top 10!! Waynes Drive Inn is named on the Huffington Post as one of the top 10 classic drive-inn restaurants. Chuck Abshere said he wasn't even aware of it until several came in and said they had seen Wayne's on the Post.
The list - released on September 6 - was written by Arthur Bovino of The Daily Meal and included drive-inn restaurants from eight different states. Bovino was most impressed with the wide selection and colorful names of some of the meals - especially the 'sissyburger'.
I rarely concur with anything on the liberal Post, but will have to agree with this..! Article in Sunday Constitution -September 25, Business section 1-B. Hope you can pull it up at:
Photo shows left: Joe, son of Chuck, and right: Chuck Abshere whose dad Wayne started the drive-inn back in 1950.

hummmmmm....look like writer Arthur Bovino's last name might be a clue to his 'burger' cravings!

NOTE: Once again, last minute notice that Washington School is going to have some kind of 'observance' this next Friday, September 30, at 2:00pm, marking the 100th Anniversary of the school. I was told that for some reason the principal - David DeHaven - is keeping this pretty much 'under wraps'?? So, I would suggest if you want more information you can call the Board of Ed - (580) 357-6900 or call Washington School - (580) 353-6299. I know it has been a struggle to get some kind of recognition for Washington Schools 100th year. Last years 'celebration' was abruptly cancelled at the very last minute. As a Washington alumn, I am disappointed this has been so badly handled.

btw...I was also told it was on the LPS web site but that it "was hidden" and hard to find it. They were right, I couldn't find it. The LPS web site has been revamped and maybe it's just me, but I think it's difficult to navigate. Here is Washington School site off the LPS site, good luck.

It's major congratulations for Neal and Dorothy (Stinnett) Goode who recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Neal was 1944 grad of St. Marys but Dorothy graduated LHS in 1947 and taught in the LHS business department from 1951 - 1956.

The combo class reunion this past week-end ~ classes '49-'52 ~ had a full house on Saturday night, from far and near! Congrats to those who put it together, very nicely done and all seemingly had a great time! More, along with pictures soon!

*******************

'59 classmate Tommy Hix is recovering very nicely from open heart surgery this summer.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Lodell B. Goochey Tate, 99, of Lawton. Lodell passed on September 18 and services were September 22 in Lawton. Lodell is mom of '55 classmate Jerry Goochey and also Beverly (Goochey) Thomas, class '51 - Beverly is deceased.

Allen C. Isbell, '55

Several have asked, so to let all know, plans at this time are to keep the restaurant open and it is....Roses' son Chris & his wife Jan are currently operating it. btw.....had pizza there Wednesday eve....very good!

Had a chance meeting and quick visit with '59 classmate Sally (Bassel) Wiseman. Sally was doing well and lunching with her brother James who is class '62.

Some Trivia: During grade school and early Jr High years, I loved Nancy Drew mystery stories. I ventured to Ratcliffes book store many times and purchased some copies of the latest for my own. But occasionally, I also walked down to the **Carnegie Library at 5th & B to 'check one out'.
If you enjoyed ND, you can reminisce with a 3 page article in October's Country Living magazine about the old books - pictures too!
**Remember the old library inside - how it looked (rather dim lighting) and smelled. Guess it was the oil they used on the wood floors. Kress had same type oiled wood floors. Carnegie building is still there, but now it's the Town Hall and remodeling and renovation inside has [unfortunately] removed the old charm and character.

I also noted that Annette Charles passed in August! WHO is Annette Charles you say...!! She played Cha Cha DiGregorino - "the best dancer at St. Bernadettes"...."with the worst reputation" - in the movie GREASE with John Travolta, Olivia Newton John. One of my all time fav movies about the way we were...!
She was 63.

I appreciate a call from '59 classmate Jerry Morgan on Thursday (Sept. 15) that Geneva (Harris) McIntosh, '62, had been in the hospital in her home town of Ft. Worth. Geneva has a history of heart related problems & at this time they were having great difficulty putting in stints. I did not get a chance to get that news out when I received word Saturday that Geneva passed on Saturday September 17. Geneva was an organ donor and then she was to be cremated. No details as to a service at this time.

I must apologize....in a 'gonna-be-a senior-someday moment', as I called 'us', wolves in last news. Mercy! What was I thinking! I know we are the Wolverines!!!! Several called my attention to this horrible mis-thought and mis-type!

btw.... OSU "whomped" Arizona last Thursday evening....37-14. This is especially for Gordon Griswold and all the other OSU'ers out there!

....from the eMail bag:....

'59 classmate Sharron (Cummings)Bolt wrote to say she is just now home from having hip replacement surgery weeks ago. A few post surgical 'problems' required a longer than planned stay in rehab. However, she told me all the amenities the SPA, I mean, rehab offered, and I got the impression she was in no hurry to leave! haha. I know from personal experience rehab is no picnic. Sharron is living in Amarillo and glad to hear all going well.

Dr. Sam Hamra, '55, emailed that he & wife Sonia fled the Texas heat and headed out to Santa Barbara, CA where they cooled down and had a nice time and a visit with '55 classmate Richard Glenn and wife Kay who live in SB. (see pix of Sam & Richard).

Very nice email from Bettie (Mowery) Vail, '58. She & hubby Dick (retired) have been living in NC since 1996. We have been getting caught up on LHS doings.
Bettie said they were fortunate to be stationed in Lawton during the time their daughter Gina could attend LHS for half her Junior year and all of her Senior year, graduating with class 1984. The tradition lives on!!!!

SAVE the DATE: LHS class 1962 will celebrate their 50th reunion next June 1-2, 2012. They are still looking for '62 grads so if you have any info or need additional info, contact Kaye (Thompson) Jenkins McCarley at kayetmc@copper.net

And, annual combo reunion of classes '49 ~ '52, coming up September 23-24.

I have posted pictures that I took at the recent class of 1947 on the blog. Right hand side, scroll down, follow link for 1947 - 2011 pictures.

'59 classmate Larry Joe Thompson sent a picture of the fire out in the mountains with these comments...."About 20 miles away from my house. Several homes lost. Will take many years to regrow those trees and to recover wildlife habitat. Horrific, yet an awesome sight at night - looks like the lava flows in Hawaii."

And, Belva (Hollingshead) Williams - would have been '59, moved - visiting family in Austin recently sent a picture of the fires burning west of Austin, TX.

Also Sharon (Godfrey), '64, sent pictures of area burning around Austin as did several others. HORRIBLE!

The end of an era as the Lawton community lost a longtime resident and business person. Rose Bianco, 93, Lawton, passed on September 11 after a short illness. From Italy (at a young age) to NY and eventually to Lawton, Rose and her husband John came to Lawton in 1950 and opened Bianco's Italian Restaurant in 1952. Many ate their first pizza at Biancos and continue to this day enjoying the great Italian dressing and other fare at the original and only location.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday September 14 at Becker Funeral Home (chapel) from 5:00pm - 7:00pm, followed by a Rosary service at 7:00pm.

Last Friday night kicked off the LHS football season as the Wolves (ranked 6) 'stomped' their annual rival Eisenhower, (ranked 10).....61-14! Go Wolves!....."beer, beer, for 'ol Lawton High...."

Don't you just 'love' those technical football terms....."stomped"...."rolled"...."held-on" ...."blasts"..."strong finish".....to WIN!

And, easy win for OU's season opener at Norman Saturday eve - OU 47, Tulsa 14. Boomer ~ Sooner!

Lots of email about lot of things in past 2-3 weeks.......

"I never felt the earthquake last week as I was driving to an appointment. We were planning on a beach trip this past weekend but IRENE decided to visit instead. Our beach place at Emerald Isle, NC had few damages and our home in Smithfield is right on the I-95 corridor and we were very blessed to just have rain, lots of leaves, small trees and branches and about a thousand pine cones."
Connie (Lassetter) Johnson, class of 1956

"Gunnar & I were in [DC] in time to experience the great "Earthquake of 2011". I was alone in the National Archives doing family research when it occurred. Leaving the building I discovered that there were no cabs available around the building and although buses and the Metro were operating, I had absolutely no idea which one might take me closer to my hotel. I decided that the only chance I had to get back to my wonderful husband was to find a hotel and ask a bellman to help me get a cab. After walking nearly a mile in a straight line, a hotel appeared in my site. Sure enough, a kind bellman came to the rescue and saved the day. The lesson learned was, "Never go to an unfamiliar city without a map and have a cell phone with texting capabilities. It was impossible to get a call through to anyone. After the Biennial was finished we visited family and stayed to watch the preparations for Irene. Our plane left for DFW an hour and forty minutes before Dulles was closed. Dulles was nearly empty of people and airplanes as we left the area. What an adventure!"
Beverly (Carnes) Carlson, '60

"Talked to Wes Hamm (class of '63). He is 80 miles N. of the epicenter in VA. He said he truly realized knew what the song meant of "I feel the earth move under my feet". They have also had a few aftershocks. He, also thought about terrorists!
Also, I gave a tour this morning [Aug. 27] at the old LHS for the class of '47. Really enjoyed everyone and they seemed very impressed with the way the building is "shaping up". It's really fun to hear the old stories and memories of the building."
Janet (Burt) Terry, '63

Frankie (Ingraham) Kinderman, '56, and hubby Mark, recently celebrated their 47th year of wedded bliss! Always good news of enduring unions and Frankie added this note....[talking about Lawton's bday]..."I remember going to Harmon Park for the Pioneer picnic. My great-grandmother's house was where they held the first Pioneer Club's meeting. Also remember Alan Dayton as he lived across the street on Arlington".

"My wife Carol & I just returned from a 2 week cruise tour of Alaska. The photo (above) is at the Arctic Circle at Prudhoe Bay. All I can say is WOW what a trip!!!!"
George Glasby

Charles Darling
and wife Jackie are on the west coast and sent these comments couple weeks ago....
"We've had a relatively mild summer up till now. The heat finally arrived and is hitting triple digits in Pasadena, with the added bonus of gulf moisture driving humidity readings through the roof.
Took the grandson through Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park earlier this month and it was HOT!!! Las Vegas was 115 when we stopped for fuel."

Bill & I attended the dinner at the Country Club on Saturday night for the class 1947. We had a great time and turns out we knew many from those years. Betty (Phillips) and hubby Clarence Aubrey; Jake and wife 'Bill' Hester; Herb, '47 and wife Jean (Tompkins) Bridges, '46; Betty (Zak) - Minettes sister....speaking of Minette: her hubby Homer Page fell off a ladder that same Saturday afternoon & remains in hospital as of this writing. Broke some ribs and other abrasions. Minnette was at the Saturday night event very briefly.
Also attending Dorothy (Dawson) DeMoro from Bills class '52 as well as Linda (Cooter) Allred, '57. Her sister Jacquie (Cooter) Forrester is '47 and came from MS.
Met and enjoyed visiting with Jack Bost who lives in IL. Jack had help but seemed he was the main organizer who put this lovely event together and he was so nice to invite us to attend. I know locally, Jean Bridges & Jeneanne Lawson helped him a lot.
We met some new friends and everyone was so friendly and talkative! About 55 in attendance and they 'voted' to do it again next year! Same time-frame, same place, if possible. Facilities lovely and food good.
I took a few pictures and hope to have them on the blog soon.

I know class '61 held their 50th this week-end. Maybe I will get a 'report' and some pictures I can share with all...?

Just few weeks back, a bad fire in Medicine Park area, now, another fire (worse) raging since last Thursday in area around and north of Meers. Been hard to fight as weather so hot and some areas burning are very remote. As of Sunday morning, 10 homes lost plus many out buildings. On west side, fire burned up to Jed Johnson Tower, not sure of damage to the actual structure? Back fires started helped stop fire approaching Holy City (Easter Pageant) area. Cooler temps came in early Sunday morn and very light drizzle, and Monday, seems a lot, if not all, under control. Terrible on the loss of homes but so fortunate no injuries other than a fireman who fell from a truck. He is OK. Can check stories in Lawton paper:

Good morning all........
This great note with a happy ending from
Janie Lou (Williams) Adams Dupler:

"I am now married to Bill Dupler, class of 63. I quit school, my junior year at Lawton High - Feb. '64. Bill married Jan Pollan, class of 66, and they would have been married 45 years, but she lost her life it Lupus in Oct. 2005. At that time, my husband Alan Adams, from Amarillo, TX was very ill with cancer and he lost his life Feb. 2006. After a year or so, Bill and I found comfort in sharing our grief and after a time fell in love and were married at the First Christian Church, here in Lawton on July 1, 2007. I work at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home and have for 25 years."
Then Janey goes on to say..." I entered a pie in the Oklahoma State Fair Pie Bake Off, sponsored by Pillsbury and won First Place. I have never been so shocked. The pie was then entered in the National contest and I won 1st Runner Up. The entire contest was so much fun, the Lawton Constitution did two different pictures and articles and KSWO did a new piece and I am still listed on the Pillsbury web sight under State Fair Pie Winners. I did attach the picture at the Oklahoma State Fair 2010." (see above)

I am hereby officially volunteering to help Janey with the tasting portion of her pie productions!

"I agree with LHS'ers that saw the Buchart Gardens. Saw them 3Times while living in S.Francisco and Seattle area. The flowers just take your breath away,so beautiful. I was fortunate enough to find video's in the wonderful gift shop, so now have two of them."
Verna (Brammer) Zeiders, '52

"Hi, Just a note that I am in Pagosa Springs, Colorado till mid- October. You never know if some class mates are vacationing in Colorado and connect for coffee. I am a "workamper" at Pagosa Riverside Campground. That means I get my site in exchange for 20 hours of work each week. I love meting people and helping make their vacation pleasant. Ya all just call my cell phone 760-362-2937 if your in the area. Life is good and God is Great!"
Charlotte Magill, class of '56

The weather continues to reek havoc on classmates.....

Ed Goodgion (Max) who lives in Manassas, VA sent this note:
"Now we're waiting for the aftershock. When the quake hit in Virginia yesterday [Tuesday], the first thought many of us had was "9-11 ... again"? But I couldn't see any terrorists in the forest behind my house, and the house was still standing so I figured it had to be a large low flying aircraft from Quantico or something like that. We've not had an earthquake here in 117 years, so that thought never occurred to me until I received a call from my son 300 miles away in NC, where they felt it too. Manassas is about 50 miles from the epicenter and escaped with little damage, although there was some in D.C. Vee Deanya was out of town, but the dog and I were a little worried. We're told the aftershock should hit sometime this afternoon, but if our house survived the original tremors, we should have nothing to worry about now. So we're back to business as usual."

And, Janette Hanes spoke with Carol (Hankins) Pokporny shortly after the quake. Carol who also lives close to DC said everything was 'OK'.

This from Murdoch Matthew, '49
..."No. 3s [earthquakes] aren't very big, but people there might have noticed it. I wrote Charley Crabtree, LHS Class of 59 or so, to see if he'd noticed the little No. 2s between Oklahoma City and Norman. He's living north of Norman now, taking care of family business, while continuing to work by Internet for his company in southern California.

As you probably heard, the East Coast tremor was all the news yesterday. I was sitting at my desk when everything sort of waved back and forth about half an inch for almost a minute. I check the California earthquake maps daily to see what my kids in San Francisco might be experiencing. There are a lot of earthquakes in the ocean off Eureka, where Bert Click's son was working until recently. So I knew what it was, but had to wait for it to hit the news to find out where the center was -- Virginia.

Now we're promised a hurricane for Sunday, one aimed right at the low point of Manhattan Island at the moment. It'll probably shift one way or the other before it lands. We had 7 inches of rain one day last week from a tropical storm stalled over Pennsylvania; where we live, in Northern Queens, Irene shouldn't be any worse than that. We'll see, of course.
My cousin in a Dallas suburb has been confined to her house from 10am to 4pm by the heat recently. Nothing so dire here, although the humidity on that day of rain, coupled with lower temperatures, made things very unpleasantly clammy."
Murdoch

Excessive heat continues in OK.....was 109 on Wed following days of same and expecting days of same with NO rain in sight. Thur & Fri dropped to 103 - 104. The ground is so hot, some of the night lows are only in the 80's.

'59 classmate Richard Densley, who lives down Ft. Worth way, said he was planning a patio BBQ and wouldn't have to use the grill!

****************

LaRue (Locke) Hogate, '59, has finished her treatment for cancer, post check-up good and at this point she is doing well down in the Texas Hill Country!

Sarah (Olsen) Vaughn, '56, son Jim, emailed that Sarah returned to her home on August 22, she will receive no more treatment for the cancer as it has spread too far. She will be giving up her email, so if you would like to contact her, the number is: (405) 672-4427; her address is: 3007 Del View Dr. Apt. A, Del City, Oklahoma 73115.
Do it soon.

Sorry to report the passing of Daniel 'Danny' Ray McLain, 70, of Lawton. Danny passed August 24. He was LHS class 1960. He is survived by a son Danny; two daughters, Jana and T.J; two sisters and extended family.
Graveside services will be 10:30am, Monday August 29 at Marlow Cemetery.
Extended obit and guest book at:
www.grayfuneral.com

Also passing, Carl Taylor of Georgia. Carl passed on June 23 after about a years battle and unsuccessful stem cell transplant for multiple myeloma. Carl was married to our '59 classmate Monna (Muncey). I know many had opportunity to meet Carl as he & Monna attended our class '59 reunion back in 2009. Very nice gentleman. Monna asks to be remembered on your prayer list.

Please join me in remembering in prayer, those who have lost loved ones, those who are ill and taking treatment, and those who are on the east coast, in possible dangers and for sure, inconvenience.

*****************

Hope to make some new friends and take some pictures this evening (Sat) as we plan to attend the class 1947 reunion.
Regards to all.....Georgia
